anyone got any advise on load for .270
i got this gun while back it is winchester model 70
i would like to play around with it to find a good hunting load ,deer antelope etc.

I have a load of 55grains of H4350 over the 130grain Barnes TSX, Winchester cases, WLR primers and seated to 3.415(.10 off). Getting 3100fps and .5MOA or better at 100 yards. Of course I worked up to this and obviously works in my rifle and may not in yours. Use caution when using info from others. This is a very good deer/pronghorn load and would even work on elk if put in the right place. Good luck.

Mine loves 130gr Hornady SST's, Win brass and primer, and 59.5 gr H4831SC, and does fine with the same load as above except 150gr SST's and 57.5gr H4831SC.

I have some Bergers, but haven't gotten around to trying them yet.

I don't have Bergers but my load is 54.4 gr. of IMR-4831 under Hornady 130 gr., with Winchester large rifle primers. Been gonna try the Sierra 135 gr. Match King for accuracy in my 270 but haven't gotten around to it.

IMR 4350 will get you going with either 150 or 170 grain bullets. I would use 47 grains as a starting place, and don't go above 52 with either. This powder makes some really accurate loads.

+1. Yes it does. I like IMR 4350 for the 130 grain bullets. Once I get to the 140 and higher, R22 has been the best powder for accuracy and higher velocity. IMR 4350 will still shoot well with them, but the extra fps is a plus. I also load the 100 grain Hornady SP with 4064 at 3498 fps. It smokes deer and yotes well.

chad, what weights are you using for the 270?, my wife just got a ruger m77 270 and I would like to start reloading for it. i have the imr 4350 for my 300wm and bought some 130's this weekend but didnt know where to start. i bought some RL22 because i saw it was supposed to be accurate

What 170gr Projectiles are you using or is that a typo? if you have custom 170's H4831SC is a better powder.

59.5 gr H4831, 130 gr Hornady Interlock, seated to the cannelure, this was my .270 Win load for the 20 years I hunted with it. Sweet and deadly!

I forget who makes it, but there is a 169.5 grain .277 bullet out there. This is the heaviest I know of, other than the old Barnes 180 grain .277 bullet.

Wildcat offers the really heavy .277 bullets but Im not sure what twist they need. Honestly I went the other way with my .270. Im running the 110TTSX at 3400fps with 59gs of H4350. It consistently runs a bit over an inch at 200yards. The Hornady 110Vmax is a ballistic twin to the TTSX and I use it for practice, they are dead even on drop and drift to 600yards which is as far as I go with my hunting rig.

I don't have that rifle anymore. I didn't record the bullets maker. I didn't even have a chronograph at the time. But at the time I was using Sierra ans Speer pretty heavily. This was early to mid 1970s time frame.

I'm almost positive that 170 was an OLD Speer bullet.

When some old guy in Alaska died in 2004, his nephew sold me his pre 64 Winchester M70. It had killed 2 walrus, 2 grizzlies, 2 wolves, etc like Noah's Ark... and 128 Sitka black tailed deer.

I took off the wood stock and put on a Bordon Rimrock synthetic stock.
I took off the Redfield scope and put on a Leupold 2x7
I took off the barrel and put on a Pac-Nor 270 no. 1 taper 22" 270 barrel.
I put on a Harris swivel bi-pod

It is very light.
I shoot 130 gr Ballistic Tip Noslers with moly at 2900 fps with 50 gr IMR4895.

In 2008 it killed (3) mule deer at 400, 400, and 500 yards.
In 2009 is killed (2) mule deer at 400, 429 yards.

It shoots a 5" group at 450 yards.

Neat story. Always have had a soft spot for the .270 Winchester after reading all those Outdoor Life stories Jack O'Conner wrote.

The 270 WAS Jack's favorite cartridge. In 1972 when I bought my first Rem 700 I started to go with a 270. But at that time the 25-06 had a better offering for bullet choices to handload. And Nosler had just put the Partition out in 25 caliber. Winchester and Remington were the main bullet makers for the 270 at that time. Their ideas were somewhat more scarce on projectile design.

The ammo and component industry has come a long way the last 30 or 40 years.

Been shooting 54-56gr H4831SC with 150gr Hornady SST and 140gr Nosler Accubonds. Worked those loads up before I had a chrono, but they must be pretty fast and hot, has about the same amount of felt recoil as my 180gr .300wm loads with ~73gr H4841.

Honestly, it's still my old favorite round. I learned to reload on it, and know it well. It is a great caliber that will take anything in N. America. And it does recoil a bit!
