The ABCs of eliminating Parallax

I always considered parallax a non-issue, until I realized I was wrong. This topic seems to come up at least once a week for me in discussions with shooters and I have come to realize that most people give me the nod of affirmation that “yes they get it”, until they realize that the nod applies but they meant “yes theyre getting issues from it”,  fix it and then magically hits happen more frequently.

A. Identify:

  • Appearance of movement between the reticle relative to the target when shifting eye position.
  • Occurs when reticle and target are on different focal planes.
  • Identifies Parallax being off.

B.  Know why youre gonna miss if you don’t fix:

  • Misalignment between the reticle and the actual point of impact.
  • You SEE the reticle one place but the rifle and scope aren’t actually pointing there.
  • Can lead to
    • Erratic wandering groups,
    • missed shots,
    • bad wind calls,
    • frustration.

C.  Correct:

  • Adjust Parallax Knob until relative movement does not exist: Adjust until the target and reticle are sharp and “glued together”.
  • Check: Move your head slightly in a “yes-no” manner; the reticle should stay fixed on the target.
  • Get more impacts

Ocular focus can also lead to parallax issues. You might think you've got it focused but if you're experiencing issues with the parallax set at the correct distance and still have reticle shift check your ocular.
As long as you realize that "the correct distance" doesn't mean the numbers on the parallax knob aren't gospel, that makes sense. The correct distance is when the target is as clear as possible. (After you have focused the ocular)

Very clear statements here Chris ! Parallax adjustment is just so much more than turning the know to infinite !

I’ll have to check this video for sure. Great info in this community
I didn’t realize the importance of parallax ,
I figured it out myself, after many bad groups on paper…

very interesting that my scope manufacturer does not even talk about the importance of parallax and adjusting it correctly , when trying to shoot small groups or long distance.

I think it says something like “here is the parallax adjustment knob”.
And the best part is when they talk about the radical “ This is the redicle”

These manuals are Super informative, guys…
We’re talking deep dive…
