I always considered parallax a non-issue, until I realized I was wrong. This topic seems to come up at least once a week for me in discussions with shooters and I have come to realize that most people give me the nod of affirmation that “yes they get it”, until they realize that the nod applies but they meant “yes theyre getting issues from it”, fix it and then magically hits happen more frequently.
A. Identify:
- Appearance of movement between the reticle relative to the target when shifting eye position.
- Occurs when reticle and target are on different focal planes.
- Identifies Parallax being off.
B. Know why youre gonna miss if you don’t fix:
- Misalignment between the reticle and the actual point of impact.
- You SEE the reticle one place but the rifle and scope aren’t actually pointing there.
- Can lead to
- Erratic wandering groups,
- missed shots,
- bad wind calls,
- frustration.
C. Correct:
- Adjust Parallax Knob until relative movement does not exist: Adjust until the target and reticle are sharp and “glued together”.
- Check: Move your head slightly in a “yes-no” manner; the reticle should stay fixed on the target.
- Get more impacts
