Input on 10/22 build

I’m going to build a 10/22. Primary purpose will be for the family to use easily and use at night. It must have m-lock for WML(possibly laser) and arca(preferably built in), folding butt stock and adjustable LOP. Barrel need to be integrally suppressed, unless I can be talked out of that for some reason. I want to keep it as light and short as possible. Would like the whole rifle to be as light as possible(thermals are heavy, I want my kids and wife to be able to easily hold if needed, but arca for tripod when we can). I need a really nice trigger, and would prefer the receiver to have built in pic rail as long as possible. Optic will be a 384 thermal, probably the Iray Bolt TL25SE for ease of use. I also want to attach a back up red dot for day use. I would like to have atleast a .75-1 moa accuracy at 50 yards.

Right now I’m leaning toward the following
- gem tech mist( can’t find data on accuracy)
- receiver ? My biggest unknown, who do i use
- Kidd single stage trigger about 1.5-2lb
- Grey Birch LA chassis, 10”
- bolt, etc will just get with receiever

Has anyone built anything similar?
Any opinions on my components?
Suggestions of the best receiver for this?
Any data on the accuracy of the gem tech?

I am aware that accuracy can largely depend on the ammo. I have lots of different brands to try, mostly I’ve found that SK long range match and Lapua center X work really good in our other regular 10/22s and my RPR.

Ruger American II 6mm Creedmore 20" barrel

HI all, wanted to share my recent shooting with a new Ruger American II, 20" barrel, 6mm Creedmore. This is a layman's review of the rifle. Scope is an entry level Discoveryopt ED GEN-II 25-56 PRS, low rings. The scope is a darn tank! But it worked great.

Used Hornady 103 gr XLD hunting round. Shot from 400yards to 1040 yards on 18" plates, no groups shot sorry.

I feel that this is a lot of rifle for the money. Being curious about long range precision shooting, I didn't want to break the bank on gear (like I normally do😂) before trying the sport out.

This rifle is my deer rifle, and I also can serve as an entry-drug for long distance shooting. If I didn't like the long distance shooting, then I'd have a really nice hunting rife at a great price.

Shooting background: Marine vet 85-89, Sharpshooter on M16A1, Expert M16A2. NRA Pistol instructor, IDPA, lots of Sunday steel friendly competitions, reload 45, 40, duty carried pistol for 15 years.

Why 6mm Creedmore? I loved the idea of a 243 for deer. As I looked into calibers the 6mm Creedmore seemed like a hot-rodded modern 243. Flat shooting, good twist rate options with factory barrels, wind resistant, low recoil, accurate. Turns out the 6mm Creedmore is a bit of an orphan round that I will have to buy ammo for online. Extremely limited choices where I live and I have access to Cabelas, Sportsman's Warehouse, and many local gun shops. This is such a sweetheart of a cartridge, I'm amazed it's not more popular with factory ammo. I'm in love with the 6m Creedmore cartridge.

Impressions out of the box. High quality barrel. Good quality stock. I'm 5'8" and the comb and reach were too short. If you buy one of these and you're not smaller than me, order the high comb and length of pull kit at the same time you get the rife. The picatinny style rail makes mounting a scope pretty easy, but it also adds height and I'd to ditch the rail and get the scope lower. Not sure what use that rail is for besides aesthetics and I would not have put it on as an accessory.

I had a very hard time craining my neck up and was given foam to place on the comb to try and get my head up and cheek weild right. I was not able to get the fitment right and had to compensate all day in the shooting class.

The 20" barrel returned some pretty darn slow chrono numbers, about 2750fps. Not super happy about that. I think I'd go for a 22" if I did it over again. However, I wanted a hunting rife foremost, and an intro to long range shooting as a secondary use case, so overall I'm still pleased. It will kill deer and below to 300 yards easily with these numbers so I'm pretty happy. The short barrel with factory 103 gr cartridges didn't get the 3000fps I would have liked, but hey, it shoots great with low recoil and kills pretty far out there so...

Feeding. One at a time, the cartridges were fussy about placement, and hung up nose down many times. Better to load the magazine. Feeding from the mag was 100% reliable.

Mag. This is one spot the price point hurts. The mag, while feeding okay, is cheaply made and the mag release/magwell/mag system as a whole was a pita. Getting the mag in and out was a clunky exercise and getting the mag to "click" all the way home took effort. Several times while prone, the mag did not seat, even though I thought I heard it click home, and fouled the feeding. It takes real deliberate action to get the mag in and out.

Bolt. This is a curious thing. The bolt is made of a bunch of parts and seems overly complicated. It has a very kooky bolt design and I don't understand the engineering purpose of the bolt. It has a plastic shroud that is removable, but typical of Ruger, you can screw it up and make the bolt fall apart to the point of bringing it in to an armory. I read the directions carefully so I didn't mess up, but if an owner is impatient, they can get the bolt all kinds of messed up. The plastic shroud on the back of the bolt has a lot of play, and makes it feel really cheap. Don't see how this bolt saves money, or make it easier to operate and shoot. I like the three lugs, it cycled well and reliably and has a good feel. The machining is done well and the extractor grabbed well all day, and the ejector poked out the cases well, even working the bolt slow.

Trigger. I really loved it. I used the factory setting which had some heft, but broke cleanly with very little creep before the break. My experience with triggers is primarily with M16's, AR15's and various .22 semi-auto rifles so this trigger was like a custom job to me. Not as good as my 1911's, but close. For a rifle at this price point, it's amazing.

Accuracy; When I doped the wind right, hit steel 18" targets 400-1000 yards. This was during a long range shooting class with Bangsteel in Southwest Virginia, whom were fantastic, and we did not shoot groups on paper. I'll update once I get to shooting a group.

Things I really love:
Price
Light weight.
Balance
Factory threaded barrel
Finish on the barrel
20" barrel with the spiral fluting looks 🔥
Trigger
Accurate enough to ring 18" plates at 1000yds

Things I didn't really love:
Bolt, it's weird and feels cheap.
Magazine/magazine well and release. Felt really cheap and was fiddly to operate.

The above pro's/con's is very heavily weighted on the pro side, and Ruger knocked it out of the park on this Rifle in my somewhat limited experience. I handled many rifles from the low end to the high end in stores before buying, and I am very pleased with the Ruger American II and with the 6mm Creedmore. Both the rifle and caliber exceeded my expectations by a wide margin and this rifle offers an amazing value.

I didn't get any range photos, so here it is in the "as shoot"configuration with the piece of foam they guys gave me which helped a lot.

Here is the gun porn you all love 😆

Why doesn't PRS/NRL have a power factor like handgun competition?

There seems to be a lot of mixed feelings on PRS/NRL because it's turned into a niche game where rifles are 25-30lbs with ultra light recoiling rounds to where you can free-recoil off a barricade and spot your hit.

Handgun competition went through this a long time ago and in order to mitigate the issue they came up with power factor to force recoil management into the equation. Would it bring more diehards back in or drive people away to have a max weight and min muzzle energy for something similar to shooting in IPSC Majors but for rifles?

Accessories WITHDRAWN

Got a brand new Fortmeier OTT bipod for sale here, H210 model (210mm max leg extension). Currently set up for 12 o'clock mounting (top rail), but apparently the mounting spigot can be removed from the clamp and flipped to allow mounting on the 6 o'clock rail position. Incredibly sturdy and solidly-built. Bipod can be quickly detached from spigot by means of a small lever. Shipped directly to me from Solid Solution Designs in the Netherlands, and was mounted once, but never used -- hasn't even been outdoors.

Note: white markings near feet is just some lithium grease from the factory, and can be wiped off.

Asking $250 shipped and insured CONUS. Payment via discreet (NO NOTES) Paypal F&F, Venmo, or Zelle.

Full disclosure: you can currently get one of these for a little bit cheaper directly from SSD, but the shipping does take a fair bit longer, as it is an imported item that must clear US customs.

EDIT: On second thought, I'm having some serious remorse about selling this. I think I'm going to end up using this on a SCAR project. Will edit again shortly to add a link where you can purchase this directly from SSD.

SOLD Forster Co-AX Primer Seater $125

Forster CoAX Primer Seater
Like new, literally used once. Was an impulse buy when I was at Midsouth and ended up getting a CPS a week later. Nothing wrong with it at all.
I’m 90% sure that it came with a black Allen wrench but I have the one with the Phillips head end that goes with it.
Both primer holders are in excellent condition and definitely no flaws whatsoever with anything.

$125 shipped within reason.
Or you can pickup in Clarksville TN

Scope Recommendations?

I'm kind of new to optics, I've shot metallic sights most of my life. A little help would be appreciated.

Rifle is a Ruger American Predator .308, 18” barrel.
Currently using a Primary Arms 4-16 x 44 SFP with illuminated MOA reticle.

I’d like a little more magnification for being able to see antlers better. I'd like to not confuse a young buck for a doe at distance, so being able to see small buttons/spikes on a deer is what I'm trying to do.

Here's what I think is important, but if any of you see fit to steer me in a different direction, I'm all ears:

  • Hunting will be the main use, occasional paper punching also, mostly just checking handload performance at 100-400 yds, but I might decide to stretch it out further at steel targets occasionally.
  • Magnification that will be sufficient for what I described earlier about seeing spikes/buttons as well as possible.
  • A forgiving eye box/eye relief to deal with small changes in length of pull/cheek weld that occur with thick/thin clothing or not-so-ideal shooting positions.
  • I don't think MOA vs Mil will be a big deal for my uses, but I think I'd prefer to not mix units for turrets and reticles. I'm used to dealing with MOA, but I can also math, and I think all the cool kids use Mils.
  • I don't know about FFP vs SFP. I've only ever shot with SFP scopes, but FFP and being able to range targets with the reticle does interest me quite a bit.
  • I have no idea about what style reticle exactly, but I would think something that is not super busy would be better.
  • Low-light conditions will obviously be a major thing, so light transmission is pretty important, and at least partial illumination would be nice at dusk/early morning.
  • I don't know about tube diameter and objective diameter. Will it be a boat anchor if I go 34mm/50-56ish mm? Would that help with light transmission?
  • Lastly, I need something that is not going to lose zero if a turret gets bumped, so some sort of locking function will be needed. I think that's pretty much standard these days, but I'm not sure.
I’m somewhat flexible on price, but the more it is, the longer it will take me to put some disposable $$ away to cover it.

Are there any suggestions for maybe a budget, a mid-range, and an upper-end scope that would fit these needs, and I can do a little looking around?
