Huge improvement already! It’s only been a month !

This time they didn’t beat up an old drunk lady they found laying bleeding on the side of the highway- they just told her to fuck off and then she was run over by an 18 wheeler .
They didn’t even steal her belongings or money .

She did ask for help fleeing her abuser but they had a policy not to help people .
No assault no theft no policy violations- splendid work all around .

Is there a consensus re: thread locker on breaks? In what scenarios should it be used on a bolt gun? I don’t have a silencer (live in CA)

I have an Area 419 hellfire match break I need to install. After reading some threads It seems like most folks dont use any thread locker on breaks but they also frequently swap the break with a direct thread silencer. I guess it would also be easier to remove for cleaning with no thread locker involved. Still trying to learn the nuances of building a long range precision bolt gun.

SOLD MPA BA Comp Chassis - Folding

I have an additional (I posted an additional ad about 2 hrs. ago for a non-folder) used MPA BA Comp Chassis in tungsten (color). This one is a folding chassis but the joint is super tight, no movement whatsoever when you mount/dismount the gun. This chassis has been used for a few years but is in excellent shape. It has the aluminum MPA enhanced bag rider, full front weight kit (see pics), front spigot mount, and mag block insert (for more positive magazine seating). Rem 700 SA Right Hand. $600 firm, I'll be at the Dec 15 K&M match, or buyer pays shipping. Thanks for looking!

Advanced musings on powder humidity

I've been using humidity packs in my powder for about 2 years. Was at range the other day, shooting 50 BMG reloads, 2865 fps, SD<10, all good just like usual. Used up that batch, opened a new batch of reloads (marked on the label "RH 49%), velocity fell almost 100 fps average, and the SD was ALL over the place. I'm like WTF, tore them apart when I got home, the charges were all correct. Then I noticed the date of reloading: 7/6/2023. Here's one POSSIBILITY of what happened.

There were 4 humidity packs in the 8# jug of RL50 I used last summer and am still using. If I put them in the new jug when I started the reloading session, out in my garage with 100 degree temperatures, the 49% humidity packs would start releasing moisture to get to the 49% RH. Moreover, if it had not sat/mixed long enough, the powder may have uneven humidity, with granules close to the packs having more moisture until full mixing occurred. Who knows what the distribution of humidity was if it was inadequately mixed by the time it got into the Superspiller hopper.

I had not paid enough attention to what happens to absolute water content when temperature changes at a constant relative humidity. The water content goes up something like 5x or more if you go from 50 degrees to 100 degrees at a constant RH. See: https://brownell.co.uk/datasheets/basics_humidity.pdf

I'm not SURE this was the source of my problem, but I realized the humidity packs could be a HUGE mistake if you have temperature changes in your powder (I store mine in the basement and reload in the garage which varies markedly in temperature throughout the year).

If I want the water content of the powder to remain constant, I have to keep the temperature constant when those packs are in place. In my basement it's almost always 60-70 degrees year round. Humidity packs in the powder are fine down there, but if I take the powder to the garage in summer, the packs are going to immediately (and unevenly) start releasing moisture since the hotter air in the container can contain more moisture at a constant RH. Conversely, if I go out in the garage and it's below freezing, the RH in the container will go up, and the packs will start removing moisture from the powder. So I should always remove the packs prior to reloading, and replace for storage, is what I'm thinking. At least if the ambient reloading temperature is significantly different from where the powder has been stored.

The other thing is I'm going to start recording both the temperature I reloaded at and the RH of the powder (measured by Kestrel drop) at the time of reloading.

Finally, the amount of water in an 8# jug is pretty minuscule, so even large relative changes in water content do not cause big absolute changes. However, all the "experimental" evidence guys have posted seems to suggest it does make a difference.

Interested in any thoughts especially from engineering/physics/chemistry types.

Here is a link that allows you to calculate water content based on temperature and RH: https://www.lenntech.com/calculators/humidity/relative-humidity.htm

New Scope Dilemma

I’m currently running a SWFA 10x42, but I’d like to replace it with a variable. My number one priority is durability/reliability. I’d replace it with a SWFA variable, but I don’t know what the deal is with them, they’re selling everything off and saying new things are coming, but without any updates or timeline, I’m moving on.

I’d LOVE to get a Nightforce, but I’m a dad with a family and saving up for one will take some time. I could say fuck it and buy one now, but that would mean no ammo budget and no shooting for a bit…that’s not an option, I’ve been really enjoying improving my skills with a rifle and view this hobby as therapy.

I just purchased a Arken EP5 5-25 based on the feature set and Japanese glass, but now I’m second guessing that decision based on some mixed reviews. It hasn’t shown up yet and I have 30 days to return it if it shows up and doesn’t seem like a good value with solid build quality. I’m normally not a Chinese scope guy, I owned multiple Leupold VX3 HD’s with the CDS turrets, but they just didn’t track well and drop tests even on the higher end models caused me to completely loose faith in those scopes. That led me to SWFA, although the glass is no where near the quality of my Leupold, I trust the scope in the field.

I’m really hoping the EP5 build quality is legit, but I’m open to additional suggestions.

Use: Hunting/Field matches/Local PRS (not looking to compete to be competitive, just improve skills)

Rifle:
Bergara B14 Wilderness 6.5 Creedmoor
Magpul Pro 700 Lite chassis

Wants:
Durable/reliable
FFP
Mil reticle/turrets
4-16 minimum, 5-25 maximum

Budget: $600’ish

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or feedback on the Arken quality for my use! I will ultimately save up/use next years bonus for a better scope, but I want to keep shooting, so simply saving up and not purchasing a place holder is not an option. Also…the SWFA 10x42 has already been donated to my daughters 22lr, so sticking with that is not an option either.

Cleaning High Performance Rifle Barrels - Video

First post on the hide in many years⚡

I've been asked about, and explained my cleaning method more times than I can count so I finally made this video about it.

The video isn't necessary to explain the cleaning method, it's just 2 cycles of 30 strokes with a tight fitting patch of gray/blue JB bore paste on a jag. The real reason for the video is explaining WHY I've converged on this cleaning method, after years of experience doing life-cycle tests on barrels and competing in Palma, FTR and ELR.

In addition to cleaning the barrel, abrasives also smooth it. This smoothing is a major hedge against bullet failures so if that's happening to you, or you're concerned about it, maintaining your barrels with abrasive cleaning can mitigate the failure issue.
