I bought a 22/45 Lite as a can host. Went to unscrew the thread protector when to my surprise, I found out it was simply held on with an O-Ring:

Looks threaded, nothing saying it isn't threaded...until you read the question someone asked.

Apparently the little threaded portion isn't the barrel itself, but an odd little nut piece that holds the barrel in tension with the aluminum housing. That part is interchangeable, but when I called up Ruger they told me they would not sell that part, nor give instructions or specs on installation.

Has anyone else ran into this and found a solution? What a pain.

to answer your question - I didn't find any route around it. Bought same pistol and then surprised by lack of threading. Same response from Ruger - "nothing we can do". I could go buy a Pacsol integrated suppressor upper for it but I'm instead just going to sell it at a loss to go buy a threaded one.

I also had a different 22/45 Lite that had the threaded barrel nut on it. That barrel nut came loose one day with suppressor use and Ruger said only way to fix was to send the upper back to them. They would not send out a part for local repair. Looking a the manual there is even a big warning about the barrel nut and they say only Ruger can address it.

I wonder if that's a distributor exclusive that's designed for Communist states that don't allow the proles to have threaded barrels on their pistols?

Nope. Standard catalog model for consumers that don’t want (or can’t have) a suppressor. All the more confusing is that Ruger offered a Lite in a similar grey color that was threaded and discontinued it... for 2019 both the grey Lite models are non-threaded. Ruger has changed up the color offerings on the cataloged Lite models each year, with only the black being consistent.

Boy, that's the kind of thing that'd piss a guy off, right there. I'd have to think that the externally threaded barrel tension nut wouldn't be TOO difficult of a piece for a 'smith to make, but by the time you went through all that hassle it may just (unfortunately) be easier to sell it and buy the factory threaded model.

Probably large enough to thread, but what about the o ring groove? Can get a measurement later. Really don't want to remake the part...would be a huge pain in the ass. Never heard of a fake thread protector, my mind was blown.

If it can be threaded, then it will be fine. You might even be able to threaded it 7/16 and use the adapter like the m&p 22 and similar pistols do.

If you haven't shot it, Buds will take it back from my experience. Then you can get the one you want, which is model 40126, unless you really need the light weight. I have a mk3 lite and the 40126 and I like the heft of the 40126.

I am getting ready to have one of my Mk 2 slab sides chopped to 4 5/8" and threaded though and then that one may become my favorite.

Oh I shot it. One mag each between my employees and I. Then went to try a can and......the sads

I think I'm gonna weld on that o ring slot, turn it back to the correct OD, and thread. Unfortunately Ruger won't help, remaking the whole part would be more expensive (not crazy complex, but not crazy simple), and then I'm gonna have the only threaded wood grip 22/45 Lite out there. I'll sell it for only $800 :D

Damn that's a heart breaker. I just bought a 22/45 and if it showed up unthreaded I'd have been pissed.

Buds is a good company contact them first you might be surprised.

yeah, I suspect all the 22/45 Lites use a barrel tension nut and Ruger has both a threaded and non-threaded version of the nut. Really sucks they won't sell the nut separately. I'm tempted to just buy the upper but there are also deals to get a full 22/45 Lite for $168 more so seems better to buy a whole pistol.

It makes sense when you look at the barrel. Remembering it is a .22, you'll note that it is barely a tube. When you notice the thinness the barrel, You wonder how it would stay centered in that configuration. At that point, a grommet makes sense as the whip in that 'barrel' would make it useless.

Any attachment to that barrel would bend it into the ground.

I figured it just flared out at the end. I was wrong.
