I thought some of you might get a kick out of this...

I have not even competed in a match yet. Just thought about it A LOT, and watched some footage of matches but I still had this bizzar-o dream last night:

At my first match at a range I'd never been to before. Standing "in line" for my turn to shoot. PANICKING that I do not know the range and the distances on the targets. So I'm on my phone on google maps trying to measure the distances but the phone is acting up and I'm afraid someone is watching me and going to say I'm cheating. So I figure out the range and start writing up a dope card real quick. My STEP-GRANDMOTHER comes out of nowhere and is double checking my work. She says "the shooter in front of you dialed up 17MOA, and you have only 2.1 on your card." I tell her she's crazy and the guy was probably dialing BACK DOWN from a previous shot because these targets were only at 200yds. She says I'm right, then I move up in the line.

It's my turn and I had left my box of ammo at the back of the "line". So I ran and grabbed it and am frantically loading rounds into my mag so I can shoot. The whole place is waiting on me. I load three good rounds into the mag and the rest of the box was crap. All the rounds were completely corroded like they had sat in a puddle for years. So the RO is helping me dig through all my ammo in my bag and she finds a set of drill bits. She starts pulling the drill bits out one by one and putting them in the "good ammo" pile. I tell her "are you stupid, these are drill bits, not ammo!" She's all confused, the whole place is waiting for me, then I wake up.

So odd. Thanks for listening :ROFLMAO:

You do need to get out and shoot a match. Preferably a good local one day match. That will get some of those imagined stress scenarios out of your mind and replace them with real life stress scenarios.

so, was the RO hot?

sort of sounds like the dream about being unprepared for a high school or college test/exam, which indicates there is something out there needing to be attended to or finished.

LOL. I don't think she was? I felt like she was an older lady.

But yeah, sort of like that.

I need to just commit and sign up and make the trip south for a match. they are only on sundays though, and I'm at the age where everyone I know is getting married or having babies so weekends are booking up fast.

i see you're from VA. big state, but check out www.peacemakernational.com above winchester. they have LRC matches (belly matches out to 800-1200) and also full PRS matches. also dope days at their 1200yd range.

The Virginia PRS Club in Gretna VA, Peacemaker, and Frontline Defense are all between 2-3 hours for me. Which isn't bad at all considering a lot of guys travel way further for matches.

I've been leaning toward the matches in Gretna, VA first. But any of them would do. I'm trying to coordinate it with another shooter buddy of mine so we can go together

Pigg River Precision just north of Martinsville is having another match June 16, a few slots still open. Ive been once, that place rocks. That and Frontline Defense are my go-to matches, both about 3hrs north of me. Good folks all.

Thanks for the heads up. that's near the place in Gretna, hadn't found that one yet. about 3 hours and 45 min from me

The Virginia Precision Rifle Club in Gretna is 3 hours from me, Peacmaker is 3 hours, and Frontline is 2.5 hours. I just need to figure out dates and which ones I can make it.

I honestly want to just go watch one first so I can get a hang of how it all goes and the logistics and the process. Then after that sign up for one

good deal! find someone in the group with experience (and good scores) and pay close attention to how they attack stages and set up...bipod heights, rifle position, body position, etc...building stable positions makes things much easier...at the same time, if u see someone setting up and struggling to make it work, dont follow them up and repeat what they just did...itll will help you improve pretty quick

Thank you for the advice!

Realize and accept one thing: when the timer beeps, your brains will squirt out your ears, along with all the preparation and planning you've done for the stage. As you gain experience, brain retention improves, but there will always be something, some little brain fart. I shot NSSA-sanctioned skeet for many years (I still referee occasionally) and I have seen literally the best shooters in the world miss what would be a six-inch put in golf. It's the nature of competition.

Shoot. Enjoy. Learn. Repeat, with emphasis on #2. People too often forget that one entirely.

good for signing up for your first match! i've seen plenty of folks that came out to specate their first match and all were sorry they didn't just sign up and shoot it. definitely let the RO's know at each stage you're new and most if not everyone will give you all the help (advice and gear) you need.

at a uspsa-style match last year, one guy came out to spectate, and after one stage i asked him if he had his gear and wanted to shoot and he bolted to his car and back with all his gear!

Haha dang that’s awesome! Thanks for the tip

Now that was a funny dream and I’ve had some wierd ones myself..Not too long ago I was in your shoes & I was so nervous about going. My only regret is not going to a match sooner. By the end of the first stage I had met a bunch of like minded shooters and fears were gone. Most everyone you meet there will be more than willing to give pointers, loan gear and most importantly give you support. Don’t worry if you don’t have this or that piece of gear. Take what you have & do whatever it takes to get to a local match and have a good time. It’s all about having fun.
