I'm looking at a Mk 4 12-40x60 spotter with Mildot. My question is, do any of you have experience with this spotter, good or bad. Thanks in advance

I have always been pleased with my Leupold & Stevens products, including my 25x50mm mil-dot spotter and packer trip0d.

I have lots of time behind the spotter. Lot's of time literally being days spent behind glass. It does fine backed off at 12x or around 20x or so. Once you dial up the mag, it get's pretty dark and the clarity around the edges is so so. They are ultra durable, in my experience. I would say that I have outright abused them and nothing bad has happened.
I have nothing to compare it to except some Lecia spotting binos that look like ship binoculars. In case your wondering, there is no comparison. The Lecia's humble the Leupold in every way but are way to big for field use.
I can't say that I would buy them, but I'm not in the market for a spotting scope.

I would certainly be interested in your range report as well. Are you getting the MK4 version?

I used one while I was in the Marine Corps and I liked it, the reticle is a nice feature especially if you have a spotter calling adjustments for you. I never had any problems with the ones I used and I put them through some hard use.

My Buddy has the MK 4 with TMR Reticle, I just got the Gold Ring HD Kit. Really nice scopes, You'll like it.

I bought one with the TMR reticle,but have used ones with the mil dot. I've never had a problem with them

I have the MK4 with TMR, great spotting scope. I used it out to 1000yds and find I tend to keep the mag down around 30x at 1000yds.
The only negative I have with the scope is that it does not have a reticle focus, so the reticle always ends up a bit blurry (at least for my eyes). It's perfectly workable, but considering the price of the scope you would think it would have this feature.

we use the mk4 with the mil dot, great piece of kit, good clarity. mil dot is great for spotters calling corrections

The scopes are great. The tripods supplied with them suck balls. Too tall at the lowest setting for a spotter to truly be prone,they tip over if you have the scope in anything other than perfectly up and down position(even though they have a ball bearing system to allow you to move the scope) and the internal level pops out with any use at all in the heat(like,Oh,Iraq).

It's a non-issue. If your shooting .308 at 1k you have to dial out to catch the trace and target in the same picture. Max ord is pretty high off the ground at that point. The only time I dial that far in is for actually observing stuff happening, not shooting. I find, when shooting, you will be at about 20x-30x. I'm sure when you zero you will use all that mag to see your bullet's holes without moving downrange.

i agree with trobertson5-0 on the tripod, when you open out the legs the centre post often hits the ground(when working on uneven ground such as out in the field)when your trying to keep the scope low for spotting in the prone position.also the part where you lock the scope into the tripod(the tripods top)can become worn and loose after a fair bit of use and then allows the scope to rattle a bit and you find it hard to get a steady picture, annoying. for the price paid a better tripod should be included.the scope though is great kit

Since Leupold has a lifetime guarantee on their product if the mounting base becomes loose and rattles I'd bet they would replace it. Especially since the kit it cost some much
