i have a shelin # 5 or #5 1/2 barrel on my rifle.
http://www.shilen.com/contours.html

im trying to figure out which i have. i get confused with the E length. do i measuer from the action or threads instid the action.

the reason for this is i want to make the rifle a switch barrel and would like to order a barrel that i dont have to mess with the bedding.

any recomendations of a barrel brand and contour would be appriciated aswell. ive always used shelin and they have given me no reason to switch i just want to try a barthlin, kreiger, etc

Re: need help picking a new barrel

A switch barrel gun is a bit more than getting a new barrel in a different caliber your existing barrel and action will require some work just to get it to head-space repeatedly as will the new barrel.I do like kreiger barrels I have had good results with them I'm sure barthlin barrels are fine also.

Re: need help picking a new barrel

what more work. my recoil lug is pinned, if i thread up a 308 barrel, headspace correctly, and torque the barrel the same every time, and buy a barrel that fits my exsisting bedding what more work is there that needs to be done.

im not being a smartass just trying to learn

Re: need help picking a new barrel

You need to check the "c" on your barrel, the c on a 5 is 700 and the c on 5 1/2 is 750. They don't change much on the end so you should be able to tell which on you have. The Dim. you looked at are the blank size, not machined. (PS I had a 68 435 HP 427 back in my early life of 1970)

defintally a bad ass car.

thats the info i was looking for. i needed to find out how to find the E so i could measure the c. bacially i need to measure the threads aswell to get the C

Re: need help picking a new barrel

Depending on action manufacturer Remington being the worst the action must be trued, threads and torque shoulder as well The threads should be well lapped as they will cause wear every time you put it on and take it off. The barrel stub's X 2 need to be lapped and then fitted to the action and timing marks added to both, torquing will not maintain head-space but change it as the unit wears. You should also consider having your barrels hardened as well, it was not done at the factory unless you have a Sako.A adjustable jam nut like on the savage is best unless you can manufacture a socket system for your barrels.Barrels and receivers are designed to be put together and left that way,You need to re-manufacture it for it to work as a true switch barrel. I'm a strait shooter as well its alot of work.

Re: need help picking a new barrel

my action is a stiler 700 clone. im just trying to do my homwork before deciding on building a new rifle or making a switch barrel

it almost sounds like im not saving any money by going with the switch barrel. i would rather have 2 seperate guns but after putting a 900 in the action, 100 in the trigger, 800 in the stock id be nice to reuse those parts for both rifles. plus i have a bunch of 308 ai mags for my 260

You wont have as much problems with that action as a Remington but all of the prep should be done just the same.If you want a switch barrel keep a eye on McGowen he will be releasing one in the near future that is made "right" If you wish to build new e-mail me I love to help new guns being born just to piss off Nancy Pelosi!
