Wilson Barrels gtg?

Re: Wilson Barrels gtg?

I have a 20 inch on an ar that ive been building for a year and a half. Damn thing keeps gettin put on the back burner. Anyways I mounted a scope on it and shot a few rounds to see if it was guna be worth my investment and it shotreal good. All I need now is a trigger and a prs ,a nice vortex pst wouldn't hurt. I'd say go for it

Re: Wilson Barrels gtg?

I know that the Wilson barrels have a great reputation.

I do not believe that the method of manufacturing has a major impact on the quality of the barrels. Rather it is the quality of manufacturing rather than the method used to make the barrel that determines end quality. I base this belief on noticing that the winners of many kinds of different shooting disciplines (bench rest, high power, practical rifle, precision tactical shooting, palma, etc) are won using barrels made by different methods of manufacture.

I would still like to know if the Wilson barrels are button rifled, broach rifled, hammer forged, or single point cut.

Re: Wilson Barrels gtg?

"Air Gauged" means the barrel is checked on a machine that measures the amount of air bleeding past a fixture that is in the bore, over a certain amount of time. Wilson barrels are GTG. Hope this helps. Regards, Paul.

Re: Wilson Barrels gtg?

Not sure about the manufacturing process (hammer, button, single point, etc.).

I have a stainless 16" medium contour fluted on an AR and it's a hammer. It's a 1 in 8 twist, and while it seems to have taken a bit to break it in, it shoots very good groups with 60gr Vmax, 62gr M855, and 69gr BTHP. I have run it out to 600 yards and had no problem drilling LaRue (28x32) targets at range. Mine was chambered in 223 Wylde by a local smith. I would say it is averaging 1 moa with the 62gr M855, and quite a bit under that with the Vmax and 69gr BTHP's at 100 yards.

I'm going to have to replace the 18" barrel on my SPR rifle soon. The original barrel is a Krieger SPR contour in 1 in 7 twist, but considering the price of a Krieger (450+ $), I think I will go with a Wilson when I re-barrel.

Hope this helps,

Re: Wilson Barrels gtg?

I think the Schneider rifles are also button rifled, and they are damned accurate. Schneider is the brand of barrels Tubb uses, and he sure isn't any slouch. The Schneider barrels I have gone through (2) have been extremely accurate, so I'm not the least bothered by the barrels being button rifled.

As I posted earlier, it is the quality of manufacturing, not the method of the process that makes an accurate barrel. It sure looks like Wilson has it down.

Re: Wilson Barrels gtg?

I love my 18" specII 6.8 barrel even hot it does great. I'm no expert at all but if I had to choose any barrel especially for the price I would have to say wilson are one of the most "gtg" barrels.

Re: Wilson Barrels gtg?

Just to make sure everyone knows that Wilson barrels and Wilson combat are 2 different companies. Wilson barrel are a fine product and are some of the best barrels out on the market. On the other hand Wilson combat uses ER shaw blanks for their barrels. I have had less success with Wilson combat compared to Wilson barrels.

Re: Wilson Barrels gtg?

I have used a few of their(wilson) barrels..IMO I think they make a good barrel, not on par with Kreiger, Obermeyer, Rock or Schneider but still a good barrel more in line with say criterion..
