Looking for recommendations for a shooting mat. I don't have any requirements with respect to storage or weapons transport inside the shooting mat. Just a good, solid, non-slip shoot mat that that I can maintain.

    Re: shooting mat?

TAB Gear mat has been my go to mat for years. I have one in my call out gear, one in my training bag and one in the tool box of my truck. I like it because it rolls up small, dries fast and has just the right amount of protection.

    Re: shooting mat?

I got an Eberlestock mat from Ceylon here on the hide and love it. Went for the padded version because I wanted to be comfortable during a 3-5 day class. It's very large which is good for me because I'm tall and I like to have the mat extend all the way underneath the end of the barrel. On the down side, its pretty big when rolled up (the padding adds a little girth). If I had to do it over again, I would get the unpadded version because the padding is pretty damn thin and doesn't offer as much comfort to justify the extra $20 or the increase in size. To be honest, I've never compared it's rolled up size next to an unpadded version so this is a little speculation.

    Re: shooting mat?

I have both the midway mats. the smaller one Ive had for a year or so with no issues. the pro series is nice and big. After one use the straps that are for pre-loading the bi pod are coming loose. the stitching is pulling out.

I like mine too, simple, small, works.

I roll my rear bag up in it which works nice and still fits in a pack. Unroll it and get to work.

In the last two pictures you can see it's not much bigger than the Triad rear bag when rolled up.
I'm 6'3 and it's big enough to keep me out of the ants, sticks and wet grass/mud. Not a lot of padding but lightweight and compact.

If you shoot prone on rocky terrain you might want something thicker.

    Re: shooting mat?

I got the Midway mat for shooting at the range off the concrete. I wouldn't carry it around in the field to shoot off of though. So, I'll be ordering a TAB mat sooner than later.

    Re: shooting mat?

For prone matches I have the big fatty from Midway.

For quick, light, packable needs, I had one of these lying around the house so it's what I use: Tent Footprint

Super light, waterproof, packs very small and has stake-down points if needed.

    Re: shooting mat?

I bought a mat from midway a few years back. It was great for the money but one of the straps that keep it rolled up broke off the other day. Kind of sucks since it hasn't seen that much use. Also has a small tear in it. It was from the bipod on my 50 though, my fault shouldn't have placed it on the mat. Still recommend it just realize your get what you pay for.

Packed my Midway mat to my first comp, set it down cause there was no way i was going to use it... left it at the comp at the end of the day and haven't bought a replacement.

    Votes for a mat....

    Cheapest usable mat - Midway
    Simple and portable - Tab
My replacement (will be) - Eberlestock

    Re: shooting mat?

In Alaska, because the ground is frozen 9 months out of the year, I use a Wiggy's Sleeping pad, 60". Marpat Camo to be COOL and it's insulated so I'm WARM.

    LOL

Actually very handy, but it's not light, fast, packable like some of yours'. If I'm traveling light, I won't be using a mat.

That TAB looks like something i'd seek if I were in the market for another pad.

    Re: shooting mat?

I seriously need to invest in a shootng mat, after my last trip to eastern MT shooting sod poodles I was picking thorns and various festering sharp objects out of my elbows, knees, and palms for a week afterwords. My buddies were laughing at me and took pity enough to loan me a midway mat after the first couple of days of misery. The midway seems to be a no frills GTG mat but one of those tactical multicam numbers look really guccu.....

    The wife's Yoga/Aerobic mats work.

I live in the Northwest part of Washington State. We don't have a whole lotta sand up here ..... LOL. But, what we do have is rain .... lots'a rain. You pretty much need some kind of mat, even if it is just a tarp or rain poncho, to lay on pretty much year round. Or, you are gonna end up wet or at least damp. On the Eastern side of Washington it gets pretty hot and dry in the summer (it's high desert) and you don't really need anything to lay on (unless your afraid of a little dirt).

    Here's your eagle mat .........

I shoot for fun, not for a living. I dont like to lay in GA clay. I get greasy enough at work fixing cars for a living.

so to answer your question...YES, dry vag = happy caleb
