Gunsmithing Bedding H.S. stock

I have a Remington SPS that I want to bed into a H.S. Precision stock. My question is can I fill the whole magazine area with modeling clay so I don't have to clean up that area when I take the action out of the bedding?

i'd say sure. thats what i did ,worked out just fine.except i had to wash out the remnants of the clay.

My other question is that I see everyone wrapping the barrel with tape to keep the action level in the stock. How do you know how much tape to put on?

As you can find in the famous bedding thread, the goal is to get the ejection port of the receiver even with its matching notch in the stock. I usually wrap several layers on the barrel and then add 1-2 wraps at a time until the port is perfectly level in its opening. It takes some test fitting but works well.
