If you were going to build a full custom 20" .308 winchester, what twist rate would you go with if you were strictly going to shoot the 178 AMAX?

i have a 10 twist on my rem aac and it shoots great with the 178 amax. also shoots the 208's subsonic as well

Good choice. I'm shooting 178 pills in a 1-10 24" and it's super accurate at distance.

Anyone know how a 1-10 20 inch will handle 155 Scenars?
I'm looking to hold off on switching to 6.5 right now for tactical matches and I'd like to give the flat shooting 155's a shot to see how they hold up against the .260's and 6.5's most people are using.

I think the problem with 155's won't be the weight, it's the velocity you can push it. I think anything over 2700fps in a 1-10 spins too fast and wears the barrel quicker..... that being said, at distance I've always gotten better performance out of a 178 at 2650fps than a 168 or 155 at 2750-2850fps.

The 155s need velocity. Like over 2900fps velocity. If you wanna run strictly 155 Scenars get a 28" 1:13 twist. If your gonna keep the 20" barrel stick with a 1:10-1:12 twist and 175-178s.

Thats what Ive been gathering....over 2900 is the right node for them.
So what I dont understand though is how these 6.5's are getting over 2900 with pills not much lighter than the 155 but out of 1 in 8 barrels.
I know that the barrel life on .260's and 6.5's are less than .308....is that the reason, how fast they're being spun?
I guess Im just better off waiting on my 6.5 barrel.

I waited to see feedback on your question and saw that you had made a decision....so its not like I derailed your thread prior to your decision. Unless of course somehow my question changed your mind.
I figured I'd save the board from getting clogged up with nearly identical questions.

Honestly, my best load was 155 Palma over Varget out of a 1/10 twist out to 300. It handled Hornady pretty well too at all distances. 20 inch pipe.
