My customized Remington 300WM recently came back from the gunsmith after having it blue printed, Timney trigger install, Manners stock, and YHM QD brake installed.

The gun had a custom barrel on it already, which I was told was a Douglas #7 barrel with less then a 100 rounds on it (don't know if this was true). Prior to having my modifications done, I shot Corbon 190's, and HSM 210 VLD's, and HSM 208 A-Max's and the gun did not shoot well at all. 2" to 3" for the VLD's. 2" for the 208's and, hovering around 1 1/2" for the Corbon 190's. I ran a dry patch through it to discovered it was a 1/12 twist as the seller didn't know.

After customizing it, it only shoots slightly better and I've been trying several hand loads with only slight improvements, so I am considering a re-barrel.

I want this thing to be a tack driver. My gunsmith installed a Schneider M40 1/11 twist on my .308 and it is a tack driver and shoots everything load well and others into little holes.

So I'm planning another Schneider barrel for the 300WM but I'd like to know if people think the extra weight of the M40 profile offers that much more accuracy to justify it over say the SR60 profile. I shoot a decent amount generally 60 to 100 rounds once a week, so I want the best accuracy and longevity.

I'm also leaning towards the 1/10 twist so I can run the 210 VLD's and 208 A-Max.

Just curious what everyone else’s results have been and what you all would suggest to help me decide.

Thanks

I'd put at least a 1:10 twist on it. The 240 grain SMK's want an even faster 1:9 twist. And if you ever shoot the heavies subsonically, you'll want a faster twist than that. The one in ten is as slow as I'd go.

Definitely. 1:9 unless you KNOW you'll never put a can on it it. If a can may be in your future, then 1:8 or 1:8.5.

Definitely a 10 twist but contour depends on how heavy you want to rifle to end up. Heavier contour, like the MTU, and you will have a heavier rifle. You want lighter then you could go with a M40/M24 contour or even the Palma contours or Rem Varmints. It's up to you. No right or wrong choice.

Weight isn't a huge issue for me although it would be nice to have something lighter then my M40 .308 My 300WM has a Sendero profile and it is substantially lighter but part of that is that the Manners stock is also lighter.

I guess my main question is do you guys notice a substantial accuracy increase and or barrel life by using a heavier barrel? The recoil now is insignificant with the current weight and YHM QD brake.

I don't get out of control but I do shoot several strings one after another so I'm thinking I might benefit if the barrel is heavier and takes longer to heat up.

Here are a couple pictures of my .308 and my .300WM bottom just for viewing pleasure:

That 300wm is going to heat up faster than the 308win. I am going to say that if I was building this rifle I would go with the m24/m40 contour. 1:9.5 and 1:10 on the twist.
