My First Rem 700 build. Your opinions needed

Well I decided to build a long range gun. My goal is a 1000 yd shot. Ive made shots up to 500 yds at deer but im wanting something more challenging. This is my gun so far:
Rem 700 sa .308 varmint
Millett Lrs scope and tactical rings (just until I can save up for a nightforce)
Weaver extended picatinny base
Manners GAT stock with mini chassis
Harris swivel bipod
Badger ordinance bolt knob
I'm going to get an armalite ar30 brake just to stop muzzle jump.
I shoot federal gold medal sierra match king bthp 168 grain.

Does it sound like everything is to par?

Sounds good, except I'd change the Ar30 brake into a thread protector, and the thread protector into a suppressor. I used to be the broke dick with muzzle break's numbing the senses of every swingin dick on the firing line, I've since subscribed to the "get your can on!" philosophy. Good plan either way, good luck in your quest for that illusive 1000yd shot!

+1 to what this gent said. SW ammo, particularly the 175 is awesome stuff and hard to beat on price, better than the 168s especially for long range. He's also right about the trigger, but give your xmark pro a try, you might get lucky with a good one and not have to spend the cash on it. some get lucky like that.

other than that, looks like you have made some solid choices.

What are the advantages of a suppressor over a muzzle brake and which ones do yall suggest. Also where can I find range cards for the sw 175 ammo.

For questions regarding which suppressor, go to the suppressor sub forum and read all the "what's the best suppressor" threads.

I would love to suppress it but I dont have the money to throw down on everything to get it. Also I don't shoot at a range because I shoot at house so I can get by with a muzzle break until i get a new barrel and ill get a suppressor then.

Here's what i think, and its free advice worth every penny....

Muzzle break: shoot it for a bit, see if recoil bothers you. if it does, go ahead and brake it, but brakes usually make rifles louder and can piss off guys on either side of you. but, if it helps you shoot....

Trigger: i got mine and found that it broke cleanly and evenly at 3# without any work. i was shocked, heard Xmark pros were junk but got a good one, apprently. it does happen. if yours works, save some cash. not a bad deal at all there.

Suppressor: can definitely help recoil, but will also help noise quite a bit. it can be something you do later. so, no worries.

The Manners stock, your trigger is fine, good gear choices, a good scope to begin with... I think you are on your way. you've made good gear choices without breaking the bank, and I'm assuming at some point you plan to upgrade your glass, but then, i started with a millett too, and it got me in the game and shooting and did well for me. Shoot with the millett and then when ready you can swap out glass later. but for starting out theres nothing wrong with the millett its a good entry level scope.

I really think you should shoot the rifle for a bit and see if the recoil bothers you. if it does, brake it. if not, dont bother with a brake. thread it, but you dont necessarily need to brake it. it'll all depend on what you want, there's really no wrong answer here.

As far as ammunition goes, the 168s perform well out to about 650-700 yards, where they hit the trans sonic region and become very unstable, hence loss of accuracy. the 175s tend to stay supersonic til 1100 or farther depending on your FPS on the rounds, making them much better choice for past 700 yards.

I dont have a direct link, but google JBM ballistics calculator, and thatll bring up the website. you can get your data from that, and you'll have rough idea of what your elevation and windages will be for the various ranges you are going to be shooting at, and then can record actual data as you shoot to get your DOPE.

And for ammunition, if you are going to be shooting factory loads, i'd recommend looking at www.southwestammunition.com great stuff, and great prices, and great bunch to do biz with. also a hide vendor if I'm not mistaken...

Yah loose the brake, just thread it and cap it, save up for suppresor, and nightforce, and shoot the day lights out of it. I also heard great things on southwest ammo's 155's also. Check em out.

Great choice on the stock. Sounds like everything is up to par. How bout a badger ordinance knob?

I too am getting a millet til I can get a nightforce. Good luck!

Foweis- so would you recommend the 155s over the 175s. I would rather have the 155s just because I would be hunting with this gun also and would want a flatter shooting bullet

I wouldn't consider a brake until you have learned to drive the rifle and tame the muzzle hop on your own. If you try to shortcut the learning curve with gear over skill you will have to stop and unlearn bad habits along the way on your quest to 1000 yards.

When you move past 800 yards or so little details like trigger pull, recoil management, npa, become A LOT more important. The distance begins to magnify small errors and inconsistencies that you can hide with gear at shorter ranges.

My opinion, anyway.

It took me 15 years to shoot the barrel out on my Rem 700 .308. Good luck on that. I have switched to the 155gr Scenars from the 175gr bullets. Great ballistics and velocity. 168gr GMM won't always make 1000 without tumbling.
I would drive it as is for several hundreds of rounds and work on fundamentals at about 300. That is plenty far to see the effect of NPA trigger ect... When you tire of your stock barrel, have the new on threaded and run a brake if you like. But seriously look into running a silencer. It serves as a break and does not kill everybody else around you. I don't shoot next to people with brakes. I leave or move.
