I'm not sure what happened to the old thread, but it sounded like a problem with a pic in another member's signature. Anyway, here is my little Savage bolt knob jig for Savage handles. It's not fancy, but works pretty well. With the combination of the 4 jaw chuck and set screws it's pretty easy to set a handle up for threading. I've been threading them 3/8-24 since nearly every handle has has an air pocket inside and I don't want to run out of material.
This post is simply a how-to kind of deal to show how easy it can be. It's not an advertisement as I am not in business. There are plenty of 'Hide vendors here to take care of that.

i always cut a thread relief on my barrel tennons because that is the way i like to do it. are there better machinists out there than me? HELL YES! do their rifles shoot better than mine? HELL NO! do it how you like to buddy. it sure looks good to me.

Why? Strength issue? Simpler? Tips are always welcome as I'm kinda new to this stuff. I guess I just automatically cut a thread relief out of fear of crashing my bit. Maybe I'll try it on the next go round.

this is not a barrel tenon that is overbuilt in a structural/failure sense. this is making the minor diameter of the part at a location that sees high stress, i.e. a stress concentration. there is no need for it. will it work most the time? probably. is it the best way to do it? i sure don't think so.

think about where the most stress is on that joint. do you really want the smallest diameter at that spot?

if you leave a bit of an unthreaded shank and mark your lathe bed with a sharpie at your disengagement point, there shouldn't be any fear of crashing. you will have to counterbore the knob but that's easy.

I somehow managed to talk Mike out of one of the knurled versions for my new Savage and it's great. I'm no engineer or a machinist but even though he did cut the relief when the two halves go together the finished surfaces mate so perfectly that they also strengthen the joint when screwed together. If they were just screwed together without the shoulders then I can see it would be a weak joint but you'd have to pull apart that relief area to get the joint to break. I guess I'll let you know when mine breaks. My guess is I'll not have too.

There might be better or other ways to do it from the ones I've seen at the matches these are as nice as I've seen so far.

I can't see the handle ever breaking since I'm threading them 3/8-24, but nothing wrong with making it better. Having read plenty of 300sniper's posts, I appreciate the imput of a skilled machinist. I could see using that technique on muzzle brakes as well.

I've used a sharpie plenty of times, but not for threading. I've just always watched what was going on at the bit ..... especially since voids all of a sudden appear with these bolt handles every now and then.

3/8-24 is a pretty decent size. the minor diameter is about the same as my major diameter (5/16-24). the couple pictures that showed the shank and threads looked like the thread relief is smaller diameter than the thread minor diameter. again, it's probably going to be fine but i still think it would be better without a thread relief, a short non-threaded shank and a counterbored bolt knob. it's not going to take much, if any longer to do it that way.



and for the record, i'm no skilled machinist. i'm just a garage hack learning things as i go.

From your posts, I'd say you are "hacking" away at it pretty well.

Looking back at those pics the thread relief is a lot deeper than necessary

. That was the first one I did and have improved quite a bit since then.

Can I ask what angle the flat is to get the shaft on center? Or is the purpose of the four jaw, to dial it in? I think I might try to make one but my lathe at work uses collets. If I can make a fixture and just pop it in and indicate off the back shoulder.....

It's an 11 degree angle. I can't see it working too well in a collet as it seems like every Savage handle is a little bit different. It also works for left handed handles. I use the 4 jaw to dial in each handle to where I think the handle and knob are going to meet, if that makes sense. With the set screws and 4 jaw it's pretty quick to set up.

There are a lot of vendors with orange names that take orders. I'm just playing in my shop and sharing the ideas.
