Seems as though someone murdered 2 US Servicemen belonging to the Coast Guard in Kodiak Alaska. A fucking shame as these guys do a hell of a job out there with search and rescue. Hopefully the perp gets caught and rots in hell. May these guys rest in peace.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—

Two Coast Guard members were fatally shot Thursday at Coast Guard Communications Station Kodiak in what officials said appeared to be a double homicide. They said they have yet to identify a suspect.

No arrests were made as of Friday morning, according to FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez.

There's no evidence to suggest it was a murder-suicide and the FBI is treating the crime as a double homicide, Gonzalez said.

The victims were found at their work areas inside the station early Thursday by another Coast Guard member.

Coast Guard Spokesperson Sara Francis said that the roughly 60 enlisted personnel and civilians working at the station had been accounted for.

Capt. Jesse Moore, commanding officer of the Coast Guard base, says the shootings likely occurred sometime between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday soon after the two arrived for work.

Moore says he's not aware of any threats or anything else that might have indicated problems at the station, which is equipped with security cameras.

The communications station serves as the "ears in the sky" for radio transmissions from mariners and aircraft. People who want to enter must show identification, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Charly Hengen.

"It is a secure facility," she said.

Officials believe a third person was involved, but they wouldn't say who that person might be or how they were involved.

The base and an adjacent school were on lockdown Thursday morning. Officials called on the city's 6,300 or so residents to remain calm and vigilant.

Marilyn Davidson, the assistant superintendent of the Kodiak Island Borough School District Assistant, said schools were in a lock-in mode by early Thursday afternoon. That essentially means students are not allowed outdoors for recess.

Davidson said one school, Peterson Elementary School, was on lock-down mode, meaning students cannot leave the classroom, but the district was advised by state troopers that it no longer needed to take that precaution.

Schools were not taking special precautions, Friday, the Coast Guard said.

In a statement earlier Thursday Moore expressed regret for the deaths, which hit Kodiak's tight-knit Coast Guard community hard.

"We are deeply saddened that we lost two shipmates," Moore said. "This is a rare occurrence and we are going to do everything possible to ensure we find out exactly what happened."

Coast Guard chaplains are reaching out to anyone who needs counseling, Francis said.

The names of the victims will not be released until next of kin have been informed. FBI agents and an evidence response team headed to the scene from Anchorage because the shootings happened on federal property.

Alaska State Troopers, Coast Guard Police, and the FBI are jointly investigating, with the FBI taking the lead.

The Coast Guard base had heightened security, Friday, but personnel had resumed normal duties, Francis said.

The COMMSTA was my first duty station in the Coast Guard. Still have a few friends up there. I can only imagine the confusion and turmoil that must be going on in the very small comunity on that island.

I have been getting pretty lax about carrying lately. One of the first things I thought of after reading about this incident was if it can happen in Kodiak, AK where can't it happen? Time to get back on track with my carry.
