Broken Badger Ordnance FTE Brake

I pulled my rifle out of the case and my new Badger Ordnance FTE muzzle brake had rotated 90 degrees. Upon closer inspection I noticed it had actually broken. I brought the rifle home and unscrewed the brake to measure the barrel where it was turned to fit the brake. With a dial caliper, it seems to be 0.0065 (approximately) smaller than the drawing's tolerances allow.

I'm going to bring it back to the gunsmith that installed it but I'm at a loss as what we can do about it. Hopefully they'll replace the brake. Not sure what to do about the barrel.

Any Suggestions?

So your saying the clamp was overly tightend to compensate for the undersized barrel cut? If so then the smith should buy you a new barrel and brake.

Yes, I think the brake was overtightened to compensate for the extra material removed but I'm not absolutely sure yet.

Technically, that is 100% the fault of the person that turned the barrel down. If Badger replaces the brake, it will be out of generosity.

You have a few options on the barrel...

you could cut off the threads and start over.
you could build it up with devcon and turn it down to the proper size.(probably want to turn more off the barrel to have more thickness on the devcon)
you could knurl the area where the brake clamps. (with this option you run the risk of deforming the bore from the pressure of the tool)

Have a custom brake made to specs to fit your barrel threading.

I'd do that before you take it back to the smith who did the work.

Did just that. What a stand up company. So was the gunsmith. Took it back and before I could call them back and relay Badger's response, they had another on order. Both companies were first class in their responses so far.

The barrel was slightly under cut but probably did not cause the break alone. I don't know for sure yet but the smith and Badger are working together to remedy the problem.

Is the pinch bolt is supposed to be cranked shut?
Don't you just snug that thing?

I had it off the gun. I put it back on to take the pictures. But yes, I would think just snug. The only reason the two sides are touching is because it's broken and I have it tight enough so not to spin around on the barrel. Sorry for the confusion, I should have stated that in the beginning.

This is a another reason why so many including me consider Badger Ord the best in the industry.
