You will need to "watch the topic". At the top of every thread there is a "Topic Options" tab. Click on it and a menu with 5 options will come down.
Third option is to add the topic to your watched topics.
Assuming your profile settings are correct, you should receive an email from SH with a link to the topic, and the replies should be featured in the email so you don't need to visit the topic.

a little flag will pop up and flash at the top of the page by my stuff when you get a pm and you will also get an email like cs1983 said click on my stuff and click messages
