im starting to load 260 heavies. 142 sierra match king, H4350, and nosler brass. whats a good average Feet per second that doesnt smoke the barrel but fast enough to do the job?

Re: 260 FPS

My current load is running 2840fps with 140 AMAX. I ran it up to 2950fps with decent accuracy and no pressure signs but the 2840fps load shoots the best in my gun.

Re: 260 FPS

We're running 140 weight bullets at 2820fps with a 28" barrel, could do a lot faster but when it's making wee itty bitty holes and hitting small steel at 1000 yards no sense in pushing faster which is harder on everything. Just a couple clicks more to get there but lots longer barrel life. My short barreled (15") XP is only getting 2500fps and it gets there just fine also but also needs just a few more click to do it. Velocity isn't what hits small steel at long distances and the wind is going to move every bullet around to some degree. Get good accuracy in the 2800fps range and learn to decipher wind and you'll be good to go.

Seems that 2800fps for the 139 to 142 weight bullets is like magic in the 260 even for very long steel.

Re: 260 FPS

So, are the velocities mentioned in this thread for a 24" or 26" barrel, or does the extra couple of inches nor really matter? Also, does running a lighter bullet at 3KFPS work better at 1000 yards and is it harder on the barrel?

I'm in the planning stages for a future .260 build.

Re: 260 FPS

So what would be a good ball park powder weight to get started with for the H4350, nosler brass and 142 matchkings? 42 to 43 grains? my book doesnt have a table for the H4350

at 42.8 im at 2933fps.. but accuracy was meh!... 42.5 accuracy much better.. but need to re crono..

Re: 260 FPS

i run mine at 2750 w/ sceners 139 gr 24" barrel
at 28" they ran at 2850

i think 2750 is fine... until you can master the wind in .1 mil
increments going faster is pointless

Re: 260 FPS

Dude, 2650 fps, especially out of a gas gun and easy on the brass. 27.5 mins out to 1,000 yds. just like my 220 MK's/.300 WM at 2630 fps. This has been my experience. Accuracy, you would'nt want to stick your head out at 1,000 yds cause it will most likely come off.
