I am looking for a quality single stage press for miscellaneous case prep stuff. I have considered the RCBS Reloader Special 5, Hornday LNL single stage, RCBS Rock Chucker and Redding Big Boss, but I have it narrowed down to the Rock Chucker or the Big Boss. Is any one better than the other? Which one do you suggest? TIA

Re: RCBS Rock Chucker or Redding Big Boss?

I started with a Rockchucker, added a Loadmaster, then a T-7. They are all mounted on my bench right now. Somewhere along the way I acquired a Redding Boss that I have mounted on a travel bench.

I like the RCBS but the primer catcher is pretty much a big tray. The Big Boss has the same box next to the ram that the Boss has. If you're looking at depriming I'd consider the Big Boss II for a couple bucks more. The T-7 spits out the ocasional primer but it has the best primer collection of the three. If you looking at economy the Rockchucker is pretty hard to beat.

As an aside did the discontinue the original Rockchucker for the Rockchucker Supreme?

Re: RCBS Rock Chucker or Redding Big Boss?

I'm not looking to spend the money for the Redding Ultramag or T-7. I could be talked into the Redding Big Boss II, but that is the top of my limit. this press is only going to be used for miscellaneous tasks like decapping before swaging and decapping before case prep. Please recommend a quality press below about $175. That's why I want to know about the Redding Big Boss or Rock Chucker.

You don't make it an option but I think your very best choice would be a Lee Classic Cast. You seem to want a sturdy iron press that's well made and will handle spent primers without spilling the waste grit down on the ram; that's the Classic Cast. If it had been available when I got my Rock Chucker my main press would be red instead of green. And it's prioe is friendlier too.

Currently all Lee for me. Had green in the past, but the Lee Classic Cast and Lee Challenger, both with the quick change breech bushings, are quite nice. I've never liked cast linkage systems that are found on the "others." So many companies try to sell you on the size/strength of the ram, BUT think about it. Where is the leverage at when you size...the linkage!!!
