I am going to buy a Savage rimfire rifle soon. I was seriously thinking the 93 17FV was it but I already own a Ruger single six that can shoot .22mag So if I get a 22wmr FV I only need one type of ammo. Is the accuracy that much better in the 17HMR or not? I read a Chuck Hawks article claiming the .22mag cannot hold a candle to the 17HMR in accuracy. This rifle will be used for mostly target and Pdogs.

Re: Help me decide

Unfortunately I can't give you a side by side comparison, but I've had my 93fvss (WMR) for a little over a month now with maybe 300 rounds thru it...so it probably doesn't even rate as broken in.
I've narrowed the ammo it likes down to CCI MAG HP and the Hornady V-Max. Shooting 5 shot groups at 100yds it seems pretty easy to shot 1" groups with either of these rounds with a bi-pod but now rear support.
Heck, my 11 year old on his first try did a 1.25" group (he's a nasty little shooter for his age).
The one thing I can comment on, and the reason I chose the WMR over the .17 is wind. Last Sunday there was a steady 7-8mph wind with gusts to 12-15mph. I was having very little trouble with this whereas another fellow with a .17 definitely had issues.

Re: Help me decide

I had a Savage 93 .22 WMR and was not pleased at all with the accuracy. My savage MKII .22 LR shot great at 50 yards but would not do as well as my .17 HMR at 200 and especially 300. The .17 HMR is my favorite caliber, and paying the little extra for the accuracy is fine by me. JMO.

Re: Help me decide

17 hmr is unbelievable until you shoot one. I could bust bottle caps all day at 100 yards with my cv. It has become my go to truck gun and I have shot groundhogs and squirrels at over 100 with it easily. I have owned one 22 mag and wasnt impressed

Re: Help me decide

Also look at the HM2 caliber 22lr necked down to 17. Ammunition is cheaper. I bought some Eley a few years ago for $3.50 box. This little round is very accurate and flat shooting. has a little less range than the HMR but is quieter and does less meat damage to squirrels. Good to 125 yards.

Re: Help me decide

there's a whole bunch o' threads on the very subject, put in the google under the shout box ".22mag 17hmr" and you get a whole bunch of input on the subject.

some of what are in those threads are opnions and bias, but there are also some factual information and some side by side comparisons to help make a sound conclusion.

it kind of comes down to what you are using it for, and in many cases (believe it or not) the typical kind of weather you'll be using it in.

enter the wind drift argument.....

Re: Help me decide

I don't see anything special about the 22 mag. The 17hmr goes a lot faster and shoots flatter.
I have a 22lr right now and it works great to 200 yards. I have been thinking of getting a 204 just for long range work. The only problem I see is the critter is usually destroyed. Not good when I want to eat it. That is why I use 22lr inside 200 yards.
