Its easier to setup the lathe to cut in reverse and just thread towards the end of the shank.

Dont forget to turn your tool upside down and run the chuck backwards. Otherwise it will cut left hand threads. This actualy works well as some lathes need to stay engaged to cut Metric Threads...but not all of them.
