Been trying to trade into a 300 WM, but it's just not happening. I have an opportunity to trade into a Savage fvss in 300 wsm. I hunt with a 300 WM Model 70 XTR in a McMillan featherweight and am looking for a heavier platform to try LR. I've read the Savage vs Remington vs FN/Win discussions and can live with the Savage for a whole, I think. I'd appreciate your input on the fvss or 300wsm . I might hunt it or punch some paper, but I'm not in the tactical business and won't be. Thanks

Savage rifles are great, so don't worry about that. Most of the hate that is directed towards savage rifles is because they don't look good, that's pretty much it.

I shoot with a savage in 300wsm, the wsm is a great performer, nearly mirrors the ballistics of the 300wm (with about 30-50fps less)and uses less powder. Right now im developing loads with 208gr. Amax and getting a bit over 2960fps out of a 24" barrel.

The Savage will do whatever you want in fine order. The 300WSM will definitely fit the bill for any long range games you wish to play. And before you know it, you will be going the tactical route!! LOL.

First suggestion would be, get a new stock for it. I personally recommend a Manners Composite. Awesome stocks, and super heavy duty without the weight. Since you will be hunting with it, I would highly recommend their molded in camo version. Super tough, and looks really good.

A few modifications of changing the Accutrigger spring rates, bedding the stock, and getting LOTS of trigger time will be in order.

The new Choate "Tactical" stocks with the factory inletting for a detachable magazine runs around $225 at TacticalWorks. Yes, I know it is a tactical stock, but it is still a good workable stock for whatever you wish to do. The only drawback to it is, it is a bit on the heavy side if you plan to do alot of carrying.

I don't think the factory 12FVSS comes with a detachable magazine. At least with the factory stock, it is a blind setup. You can leave it as a blind magazine setup, or it is just some simple additional parts to make it into a detachable setup. Pretty easy actually. With the detachables from the factory, you will only be getting 4 rounds. However, there are options for higher capacity magazines for the factory bottom metals as well.
