Hi there,

I am considering the Razor 5-20X50 HD scope. It will be on a 300WM and I plan to take it as far as I can. I am undecided about EBR-2 or EBR-2B reticles. I can see EBR-2B reticle has thicker lines and dots than the EBR-2, but it is hard to decide without looking at long distance targets through the actual scope. For long range shooting over one thousand yards, which reticle is better?

Thanks.

Kevin

Re: Vortex Razor 5-20 HD reticle question

The vertical/horizontal crosshair portion is identical. The "Christmas Tree" portion of the 2 has .06 mil 'big' dots and .03 mil 'small' dots. The 2B has .09 mil 'big' and .06 mil 'small'.

The .03 mil dots were *REALLY* hard to see on the 2. I now have a 2B and really like it for tactical matches. If I want to use an aiming dot for ELR shooting, I just use one of the .06 mil 'small' dots... so instead of dialing down/right 1 mil/1mil on the EBR-2, you'd dial down/right 1 mil/1.2 mil with the EBR-2B. Problem solved.

I've used holdovers on the main reticle to shoot over 2000 yds. Remember that a .06 mil cross only covers approximately 6" at 2000 (.06 x 1.414 x .036 x 2000). The .06 mil dot will cover about 4". If your target is actually large enough for you to hit it at that range, you should have no problem seeing it.

I personally would *LOVE* a .03 'ish mil reticle in the Razor, but I can make do because of everything else the scope brings to the table.

Re: Vortex Razor 5-20 HD reticle question

If you need FFP and 20x it's pretty much down to the SS 5-20 and the Razor. The Razor has zero stop, more elevation and a more useable reticle IMHO. I prefer the user controls of the Razor to the SS. The SS has a very slight edge on glass and 10 mil/rev. If you can go 15x the NF F1 is also excellent.

If you can go SFP the NF 5.5-22 NXS is extremely hard to beat. If I could live with SFP this would be my scope of choice. If NF came out with a 5.5-22 FFP NXS in mil/mil HS/ZS for around $2k they would sell boatloads....

Regarding SS 5-20HD, I wish it had a Horus like reticle and better illumination. This is what sets the Razor apart from it.

SWFA, are you reading this board?

What do you think of the Bushnell HMDR? I like its H59 reticle. But its 26 mil of elevation is lacking.</div></div>

It's 26 Mils are lacking.....that's some funny shit.

I guess I missed the joke.

Kevin,

I forgot about the HDMR.

For reference,a 26 mil scope on a 20 moa rail won't get you to a mile at sea level with a 300WM unless you hold and then you should be able to get about 2000 yds. A 30 moa rail will get you 1800 and 40 will get you to about 1950 without holding.

The HDMR lacks the Razor's zero stop and the SS's 10 mil/rev. Glass is in the ballpark. It was a decent enough scope and a lot of guys here seem to like them. The H59 is love it or hate it. I stopped buying non-zero stop scopes.

I've seen them in the For Sale section for a lot less than a new lit-SS or Razor although the current deal on the non-illuminated SS makes it fairly attractive. Either could be a budget FFP scope for you if you can live with the features.

Here is the data on the SS v. Razor I collected (keep in mind that this was the original Razor before the ocular upgrade):

The ocular upgrade to the Razor made a big difference. Definitely less CA and a lot easier to get behind for sure. My guess is that it would be too hard to call between the two of them now. Optic quality would be the least of my concerns between these two scopes as they both perform quite well. Look at the features and price as that is where the bigger difference lies.

Re: Vortex Razor 5-20 HD reticle question

Well said. I normally shoot around 4K ft, but certainly don't want elevation adjustment range become limiting factor in the future.

Razor is the only full featured scope among these three.
