Hi, been a long time since I have been on here.....So,I have a mosin nagant/uk59 heavy barrel/l96 style stock/rock solid base and bolt handle.Total investment about 490$. The gun with no optics weighs about 15lbs. This rifle was put together as a fun gun to shoot up some of the surplus ammo I have. Use will be strictly a plinker...a very loud, heavy plinker. I have about 250$ to spend on a scope, 30mm tube a must. Reason being I already have 30mm rings. The rifle will be sighted at 100yds and left there. I would like something variable power...I already have multiple fixed 10 powers (swfa, bushnell 3200, millet 10x56)on other guns.
I have searched the forum and Iam just looking for first hand experience.Locally I have been directed towards a KONUS M30 4.5x16...A sightmark 4x16 triple duty...Millet lrs1 4x16 and primary arms 4x16. Can anyone tell me if any of these are even decent for a range queen gun? Like I said please be gentle, the rifle is what it is and doesnt need a nightforce or leupold. This is strictly a fun gun on a serious budget. Thanks

I have a tasco that an uncle had on an old rifle that still holds zero and tracks out for 600 yd shooting. I am a nightforce guy so any future scopes will mostly be from them. but I am still impressed with the old tasco's performance. Good luck

Re: Be gentle.....cheap scope question for a cheap gun

Back in the late 60s early 70s I bought a new Ruger 77 in 7mmRM. After spending $150 for the gun, I didn't have money for a scope.

About the same time my brother put a 3X9 Bushnell Banner on his Arg. Mauser. Got the eye relief screwed up and ended up with a good moon cut over his eye.

I tried to tell him I would adjust the eye relief for him but he said NOPE, don't want no scope so gave me the Bushnell.

I put this cheep scope (I think my brother paid $39 for it) on my 7mmRM to tied me over until I could aford a scope. We're talking about 40 years ago.

That scope is still on that Ruger and still holds a zero. Only I gave the Ruger to my son for an Elk Rifle, but still, the same scope.

Later I bought another Bushnell 3X9, that was suppose to be a higher quality scope.

That sucker didn't last 6 months on a 308 Model 700 Remington.

Go Figure.

Weaver kaspa tactical line, I have no experience with them but they're low cost and carry weaver's lifetime guarantee. Been thinking about getting one to try just because of the price. I have a Millet 4-16, it surprised me as far as clarity, and it has held up so far, its big, and heavy.

Re: Be gentle.....cheap scope question for a cheap gun

Add $ 50.00 to your budget and buy the Weaver tactical from midway usa. It is on sale right now for $ 299.99.

It is MIL/MIL and should do anything you want to do. I own one and for the dollar it is a great scope.

No thanks needed!

Sorry, just went back and read your original post. I overlooked the must be 30MM tube. Disregard the above.

I have a Weaver kaspa. So far I like it. I was going to go with the Weaver Tactical but I didn't want the Mil Mil.

I wanted MOA adjustments which hte kaspa has.

Re: Be gentle.....cheap scope question for a cheap gun

thanks for all the replies. The swfa 10x42 super sniper is one of my all time favorite scopes for the money, since I already have 2 of them. But Iam wanting a variable power up to 16x.

The weaver Kaspa line just doesnt have enough eye relief for me. I have looked at the weaver grand slam tactical which is a good scope for the money but Iam wanting more magnifacation and more of a target scope.

Check out the extensive selection of Hawke Optics. We finally pulled the trigger and got on board with them. Nice folks, good value for the money. My friend Ilya has always been impressed with the quality for the money, and they have some offerings that no one else has (4x32 AO mildot anyone?) I am not well versed with their products yet but anytime you need a quote hit me up

If you want something really cheap get the Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50 from Midway. It's a pretty decent scope for the money. It's also only about 100 bucks usually.

Re: Be gentle.....cheap scope question for a cheap gun

Thanks again for all the input.

Liberty optics, the hawke sidewinder is on my short list of scopes to try out. Eventually I hope to replace my millet 10X56 on my poly m14s with one.

It looks like I may be trading a set of chrysler big valve cylinder heads for a new in the box Konus m30 4.5-16x40.I got to shoot with one at the range this morning on a friends remington 700 300win mag and actually liked the scope. So, I figure I can get rid of these heads that are taking up space and not spend a dime on a CHEAP scope, unless I have to use the replacement lifetime warranty from Konus and pay for shipping.

Re: Be gentle.....cheap scope question for a cheap gun

I have several of the 6.5-20x50 Whitetail Classics. I believe they are good value for the money.

For competitive use, I have found their resolution to be marginal. They will just barely resolve a 22 caliber hole at 200yd for me, and at 250yd, not at all.

For larger calibers, or closer distances, and for hunting (especially for Varmints), I think they are outstanding scopes for the money. I have one on each of my .280 Rems.

My precise 22's wear Tasco 6-24x42 Varmint Target MilDots, and the less precise wear the nearly identical 2.5-10x42 Varmint?Target Mildots. Four of the former, and two of the latter. If I buy more scopes for hunting, it will be the latter, and not just for 22's.

I also have an old Tasco 3-9X40, made in Japan, That has been on my Ruger 45/70 for 25 years. Still works fine. They sure don't make them like that now.

In answer to the OP's question my brother has been using a Knous 6.5-20X44 M30 on his Remy SPS 308 Tactical for a few years now and has not had a single problem with it. Last time i looked SWFA had them gor $299.
