I picked up a K 31 this week.

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

OldGuardShooter,

With GP11 I found mine is really accurate. With the right reloads, it was extremely accurate. If you do reload, make sure you get a Redding #91235 sizing die. All the other Mfr's dies size the case to original Swiss 7.5x55 case size. The Redding die sizes the brass back to K-31 size. The K-31 has a 'roomier' chamber than do the other Swiss rifles. Headspace is tight though.
One thing I'll say about reloading for these is they do not like hot rounds. Keep the rounds loaded about medium for best accuracy. 2500-2600 with a 174/175 gr. bullet is where they like it best.

Good luck with this rifle, they are great rifles. I have a 1951 and had a 1956, which I sold. Both were great shooters.

So you'd recommend full length sizing over just neck sizing then?

I'm going to get a K31 one of these days!!

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

I had a couple of those over the years and with the GP11 ammo they were stupid accurate for the little money they cost.
Privi partisan makes ammo for it, their loads sucks but their brass is good. Make sure to buy the K31 reloading dies the regular 7.5 swiss won't work, don't remember why but trust me.
use a max 308 load with a 150 gr in swiss brass and the K31 is an awesome soft shooter.
congrats on the purchase.

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

Just finished mounting a Bushy 10x tactical scope on my son's and the dies are on the way. Going to use the same 175 SMK's he shoots in his .308, over some H4350.

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

I love K31, and its matching S/N bayonet.

I put a 2.5X pistol scope on mine. Sits j-u-s-t ahead of the ejection port, but on top of the bore, not off to the side. I love that gun. Very accurate. Some day I'm going to find a mint ZfK55 sniper version and pay WAY too much for it.

Next time you shoot GP11 through yours, pull the trigger, rack the bolt, and catch the empty brass out of the air. It's cool - literally.

I`ll tell ya......... they are works of art........all done with mechanical machinery..... NO CNC....
another good example of lost art is the Swedish mausers...

With GP11 I was clockin steel at 500 on my first outing with the rifle. At 100 yards I shot about a 3" 10 shot group that was dead center on the X ring.. My eyes hurt..lol

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

So i got to take the K-31 to the range today. I have to say this rifle is Amazing . i did one shot as a test to see how the sights lined up and then my 2nd shot i stuck a piece of pipe up out of the ground and at 75 yards i nailed it first shot. I will be buying another one of these for my son soon. This rifle is so nice to shoot.

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

Congrats! I've shot mine out to 225 yards with excellent accuracy. It prompted me to pick up a mint K-11, the earlier model. The gun is a bit different than the K-31, but the accuracy seems on par.

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

My wife's family lives in Switzerland so it's only fitting I should have two K31's.
The 1941 had a very beat up Walnut stock so I refinished it.
The 1943 is in a custom stock I made. I have the original Beech stock. It has a Swiss Products muzzle brake and Offset scope mount that the Wotac scope resides on. Yes the scope works great to 1000yds with reloads at 2715fps using RE-17 and Berger 175's.
I also use Lee dies and neck size three firings before I full length size.

Sorry I didn't get back to this post in a timely manner.

Yes, FL resizing is most helpful with this cartridge. Because of the straight-pull bolt, and the lack of (if any) leverage makes it difficult to seat these rounds all the way in the chamber. Full length sizing alleviates that. For accuracy purposes, you really need to watch the depth you set for the full length sizing die. But, when it's set perfect it will be a boon to you as a reloader/shooter. Get it close, then start turning down in 1/32nd-1/64th turns until the cases just fit.

Note: You may ruin one case sizing it several times to get it to the point it will just fit. My advice is to go through several cases until you have it just right, then go back and resize the cases that weren't quite down to size yet.

Avoid Samco. It took 6 months for them to ship me ammo that was in stock. This was only because I was moving and called to cancel my order so it wouldn't go to my old address. When I told the lady (who barely speaks english) to cancel my order, she said something I could hardly understand and I was under the impression she had canceled my order. A few days later when I was in the process of moving, I found delivery notification slips on my door. When they tried 3 times and couldn't deliver, they shipped the ammo back, and I had the option of canceling the order and losing 15% of my money, or paying for shipping AGAIN. Samco doesn't give a sh!t about the customer. They will never get my business again, despite their seemingly good prices.

That stock looks great! What did stain/finish did you use?

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

Thanks. Minwax English Chestnut stain and 2 coats of Minwax satin Polyurethane. After the Urethane cured I lightly rubbed it with 000 steel wool.

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

284 Winchester brass, necked up to 30 caliber, works PERFECTLY in K31's....by the way. Work your loads up as normal.

Excellent rifles that are VERY accurate.

You can shim between the upper forearm and the stock to achieve better accuracy. Lets the barrel float. Don't crank down on your stock/barrel clamps either.

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

Thanks F4 D, I have a walnut stocked K31 that appears to have been attacked by a dozen beavers, it needs to be prettied up. I usually leave my C&R rifles alone but I really like this rifle and would like it to look as good as it shoots.

Re: I picked up a K 31 this week.

Ended up with two, I meant to only buy one, but couldn't pass on one with a walnut stock.
Grafs
Grafs has PVRI brass. I use 4064 powder with 168 SMK bullets. Accuracy is short of amazing. The trigger pull is also very nice.
If you closely look at the receiver and stock you will notice it is not symetrical; right side has more material. Even with today's manufacturing methods, this rifle would be very cosly to make.

Try copper wool. Steel can leave itself behind microscopically and then surprise you if the stock gets damp.
