Does the height really make a difference assuming you can get a good cheekweld? My setup is probably too tall but with the adjustable cheekpiece on my stock it will allow me still to get a good sight picture. Thoughts?

Re: Scope height above bore question

tacticool guys might say it does.....benchrest guys that shoot in the .0 and .1's will say it doesn't. a LOT of those guys will run a kelby/davidson setup and pretty much have their head straight up to keep themselves OFF the rifle....but, tacticool guys will say you have to have it as low as possible...

personal preference, both are proven to work

Correct me if i'm wrong, but by having the optic axis as close as possible to the bore axis, you're minimizing the distance between point of impact to point of aim on all shots between 0yds & your second zero. Tall optics like on a p90 are zero'd at 25 yds, but shoot something like 12 inches high at 50yds.

It does make a difference, but how much it matters is up to you and what kind of shooting you're doing. If you are shooting at fixed distances than it probably wont matter at all.
Since your scope and bore are separated by a certain distance the bullet will not hit exactly where it is aimed except where it is zeroed in at. The more space between the scope and the bore, the bigger the difference.
It's kinda the same effect a fighter planes guns from WW2 had. Since they were on the wings (on most planes) they would have to zero them at a certain distance. At that distance all the bullets would intersect. If the target was inside that distance the bullets would have space between them. If the target was father than the zeroed distance the bullets would cross paths and continue away from each other.
Your bore and your line of site are basically the same thing. Since they don't start from exactly the same spot they will move away from each other after intersecting at a certain point. The father away they start from each other the faster they will move away from each other after intersecting.

So long as you get a consistent cheek-weld and can eliminate parallax, it doesn't matter so much. When you plug everything in your calculator, make sure you accurately program bore height and you'll be golden.

It's the same amount of work no matter how high/low the scope is. Ignore it at your peril.

The only time I attempt to reduce my height over bore is on a traditional non-adjustable comb. Then you need to go low to achieve a correct cheek weld.
