Well, i have a Mcmillan A3 that holds an FN SPR with Douglas barrel that i built with CDI bottom metal etc.... action was trued and blueprinted by a gunsmith and everything shoots pretty well. One of the only variables left is that its not bedded.

would you guys recommend pillar bedding it? my choices are to have a local gunsmith friend bed it, send it to GAP and have them pillar bed it (along with threading the barrel for a brake and suppressor)or send it back to McMillan (entire gun) and have them pillar bed it. Advice?

Re: Mcmillan A3 - Bedding or not?

I would pillar bed it. Only way you are going to squeeze 100% accuracy out of it. GAP does a great job. Pheonix Custom Rifles is bedding rifles for Mcmillan so you might want to check them out, turn around time would be much faster.

Hi there

We can do it if you like.

If we havent been 100% on answering the phones its' cause we're busy trying to keep turn around times down

To my knowledge McMillan dicontinued bedding rifles in Jan. However when i beded my McMillan stock my gun went from stringing the accational shot to shooting a solid 5 shot .788 groups all day. Marine tex was my compound of choice. Good luck to ya.

Re: Mcmillan A3 - Bedding or not?

Mcmillan has been kind enough to send some bedding jobs our way. Their stocks are great to work with.
We need the whole rifle for bedding, So ship it complete please.
If the stock is just being finished up at Mcmillan, we can either go pick it up or it can be shipped to us in one day.

Our turn around time for bedding jobs on Mcmillan stocks is currently 2 - 3 weeks.
We use Devcon bedding compound.

Epoxy bedding action/lug area is $200.
Pillar bedding adds $30 if we have to make the pillars or open up the holes.
Bedding the barrel channel(still free floated) is $30 extra.

Forend bedded with barrel free floated...

This stock had damage to part of it from incorrect inlet work. I filled it with epoxy and milled it correct.

Some older bed jobs. Dont have many recent bedding pics for some reason.

You can see the discoloration there. Im not positive what caused it but I have my suspicions. I do a couple things different and don't get that anymore. Couldn't feel it with your finger or anything... it was just a different color.

I don't really take pics of bedding unless the customer wants a visual update on his rifle, or to inspect the work

So I don't have many pics. I will make a point to take more bedding pictures and post them in the PCR thread in the Gunsmithing forum. Might even post em here.
I hope to be doing a lot of bedding jobs from now on

And every one I do I feel I get a little better.

Thank you everyone!!!

Re: Mcmillan A3 - Bedding or not?

Keith you can feel free to take and post pics of my rifle when you get it and do the bedding. Stuff looks great! Looking forward to it

Re: Mcmillan A3 - Bedding or not?

Guys if its at all avoidable, please don't Krylon or spray paint your rifle before giving it to us for work. If its already Spray painted, removing it in the area we have to work would be much appreciated. We'll just end up removing it anyways.

The stock pictured above has Krylon all over it. It made bedding clean up a bitch because I use alcohol and Q-tips... well the alcohol takes off the spray paint and makes a mess while Im working.
Just to put that out there.... Spray paint it when ya get it back from us.

Re: Mcmillan A3 - Bedding or not?

Dont send it to Phoenix, it might slow down my gun....lol. No Keith and Brad have been great to deal with, straight up with with me. I would recomend them for anything you need

Re: Mcmillan A3 - Bedding or not?

Looking damn good, Keith! Cant wait to get mine back in hand to throw some lead down range with!

and im looking forward to my bolt knob too!

Re: Mcmillan A3 - Bedding or not?

Yes we'll bed most things a 700 bolts into. Chassis dont seem to need it, but I dont think its a bad idea. It's $120 for chassis and we use Titanium Devcon for those.

All traditional stocks(none-chassis) get steel Devcon. It's $200 for a "traditional" bed job. $230 if we have to make custom pillars.

Thanks everyone!
