Anyone have any experience with them? I was thinking about picking one up and building a rifle off it. Here's what I have tentatively planned at the moment....

Savage dual port target action: $531
Shilen SS match barrel, prechambered and threaded in 6.5x47L: $374
Manners T5A stock: $713
4 port muzzle brake: $45

Total comes to $1663 before optics. Not too bad. Was going to just rebarrel my 22-250 to this caliber, but decided I wanted to keep that caliber, and after adding in the cost of truing the rem 700 action, and the cost of the barrel blank and chambering costs it wasn't going to be much cheaper.

Anyway, let me know what you think, and if you have any experience with this action. Also if anyone has any experience with the Shilen savage replacement barrels I'd love to hear your experience and impression of them.

Thanks,

Tim

Re: Savage target action build

they are great receivers if you are GTG with a single shot. i would forgo the dual port version and go straight RR or RL for the increase in ridgidness.

Re: Savage target action build

My Uncle has a Shilen 6.5x47L Savage pre-fit barrel that after tons of work and loads only does about 1"-1.5". He just finally gave up trying to do better. I'm sure there are others with better results but you asked for any experience. Other barrels he has are far more accurate on the same rifle. It's probably a fluke barrel but it's still not what is expected.

Re: Savage target action build

I have 2 Shilen pre-fit barrels. one a 6.5x47 on a short action Savage and the other is a 284 win on a long action Savage. Both are hammers.

Re: Savage target action build

No secret, that was the price I got off their website after I used the stock builder. Check their site under stocks ready to ship, you can get one for $674.50 if you're lucky enough to find one that has what you're looking for. I added an atlas rail and sling studs if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check criterion out as well.

Re: Savage target action build

I am in the process of building a 6mmBR off a savage target action. I am going with a criterion barrel and McMillan A5. You can read up on the savage action on 6mmbr.com. I am at the same place as you ~1500 for a custom, can't beat that!

skip the dual port - I have never once used this feature

skip the brake - you are not looking for a follow up shot so it is of no use

I really like the old style sinclair f class bipod with this setup - a bit clunky, but a very solid feel

Re: Savage target action build

The brake is more for being able to spot my own shots and to watch the show when the bullet finds its intended mark....rifle will be used for both target and varmint hunting. Maybe even the occasional deer or speed goat hunt.

Re: Savage target action build

Your planned build is similar to what I have just completed. I'd recommend a CBI barrel. I have been very happy with mine. I think all target actions are large shank, so keep that in mind when selecting a barrel.

Re: Savage target action build

I've been having the same thought. Currently looking at a model 12 lrp dual port in 22-250 at a local shop. I can pick it up for 925.00. Was thinking about re-barreling it in 6.5 creedmoor, and leaving everything else stock. If I can find a buyer for the 22-250 barrel it should make a low cost bunch of fun.

Re: Savage target action build

That's a nice looking rifle! What are the build specs if you don't mind sharing?

Ya, I'm a fan of muzzle brakes. Ear pro is easy and I have yet to come up with a good reason for increased recoil.....
