Making a dummy for a 6.5x55 build. Do I have this seated far enough? Want to make sure before I send these off. Using Lapua brass and the Berger 140g Hybrid. Any input appreciated. They are lined up equally even though they look off a little.

Re: Seating question

I know exactly why you are worry I also reload for 3 6.5-55 SE and they can be a little pain to kiss the lands.

Have you found out the true C.O.A.L OF THE RIFLE ?

And I'll post some pictures of my 3 so you can rest assure you got yours far enough.

Re: Seating question

I'm having a reamer made for that round and I'm doing the build on a long action M995 so length isn't an issue. I can go as long as practical and still mag feed so I'm looking to maximize case cap and stay out of 'donut' range if possible. I just to make sure I'm not too far out or if I can/should go further.

Re: Seating question

What is your COAL and ogive lengths? Then compare to what others are doing. And what are you looking to achieve? Are you measuring off the lands using ogive? Are you checking for mag feed issues? Lyman shows COAL from 2.925 to 3.050" for 140s.

Re: Seating question

This is a new build. New barrel not yet chambered. This a long action using 270/30-06 mags I have no limit on COAL. I am putting together a dummy round to have a reamer made and chamber cut specifically for that round. As such I can go as long as possible/practical but don't want to go too long. Or too short.

Re: Seating question

this are from 3 different rifles
140gr Berger vld (hunting)
Carl Gustafs mauser
C.O.A.L =N/A WITH BERGER
(OGIVE OR THROUT ) O.A.L =2.464"

HOWA 1500
C.O.A.L =3.185"
OGIVE O.A.L =2.509"

CZ 550
C.O.A.L =3.139"
OGIVE O.A.L =2.460" ( BIG DIFFERENCE)

If you want to use the 120gr to 140 gr you want
a throut of 2.450 to 2.480"

left round you can see how far the bullet is of the howa 1500 long throut of 2.509" is but this is one of my most accurate loads.

And this is my favorite way to find my ogive length, just sit a bullet flat base ( non boat tail) up side down ( also known DUM-DUM BULLETS)AND FEED IT TO THE RIFLE AND CLOSE THE BOLT.

If I use a vld BULLET like Berger,lapua,sierra and I wanted to know my ogive length for all of them with out using a oal gage and find my true C.O.A.L with out worries if the cone shape of any given BULLET design to give a false reading by jamming it to the lands or rifling the back of a bullet will never lie.

I found out ones I found out the throat length of the chamber then by using a ogive comparator on my caliper my COAL will always be .005" to .010" of the lands.

REGARDS.

Re: Seating question

I would seat them a little deeper. Seems like the top of the boattail should be even with the top of the shoulder. This would give the bullet maximum support from the neck.

Just my .02.

I'm a big fan of the 6.5/55 SE and don't get me wrong but if I had the chance on having one build I will seriously give a good tough on doing one on the Ackley improved ,in my opinion the 40 degree angle is an perfect candidate for the Swedish case ,

I have a friend in Houston that his 6.5-55 AI is a ground dog snappy at a 1000 yards.
