Hey Guys, sorry for the BAD news:

I stopped in at "Outdoors Unlimited" (formally known as Sportsmens Warehouse) in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. I was shopping for Hodgdon reloading powder, in particular, H-1000. I was shocked to see that Outdoors Unlimited had raised the price of H-1000 by $7 per pound. No shit. The price went from $22 and change to $29 and change. I personally talked to the head of the Firearms department and he said it was because of "demand during the election year" and "politics". He also said that by election time, "We (the reloaders) will be happy to find powder at $38 a pound".

When I got back here to Whitefish Montana, I checked the prices locally for H-1000. Normally, we are several dollars a pound higher here due to how remote we are.

Well, it's still $22 and change around here per pound of H-1000 <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">except for one asshole who says there "is an election year powder shortage" and he (Snappy's) raised his prices to $28 and change per pound.</span></span>

For what it's worth, Powder Valley online still lists H-1000 at $20.55 per pound with plenty in stock. And 8 pound kegs are listed at $145.00, also in stock.

The Vultures are coming out, guys. Just like the "Primer Shortage" of a few years ago, those who are willing to rape us reloaders financially are already moving to do so. I recommend you put together the largest group buys you can afford to so you have more than enough powder until this "election year powder shortage" blows over.

My ¢2. Good luck and God bless!

What, news of a fake shortage? No. A head's up in advance will give people time to stock up while powder remains at reasonable prices, instead of panick buying when prices skyrocket and a guy's supply gets low.

There's a huge difference to the individual and to the market as a whole between taking carefully thought out "preventative measures" and having to engage in "panick buying".

Re: Fake "Election Year Powder Shortage"!

Our local reloading shop can't seem to get 45acp bullets. He says he has a standing order for 5000 and he says he is lucky if he gets 1000 in per shipment, then they fly off his shelves.

I have been noticing slight increases, but that's like everything else lately.

I'm just waiting till they keep the price for bullets, powder and primers the same, but shrink the quantity....... I notice that a lot too with every other product in the stores.

Whether there are actual shortages, or just a lot of anticipation (and price gauging) based on what happened in 08 - it's still not a bad idea to stock up now....

Re: Fake "Election Year Powder Shortage"!

The <span style="font-style: italic">"law of supply and demand"</span> is no more than the law of greed; those greedies who have the supply can demand more. But bottom line is, everything is only worth what the owner can get for it. Those who are willing to pay anything will get ripped off, just as they deserve.

Shooting is an enjoyable passtime activity for me but it's not my life. I'll sit this wave of Chicken Little fear generated shortage and the resulting frantic-panic of buying everthing in sight just as I did in '08. I refuse to drop my drawers for a dry screwing in public by component dealers; it just ain't dignified and I do have some personal dignity.

Since gold has bottomed out, I might switch to H1000? I don't actually use it, and Coeur d'Alene is a long drive but what the heck! My motto, buy high and sell low! BB

I really have never believed in the law of greed when it comes to production. Basic common sense says you will make substantially more if you produce more if the demand is there. When the demand is not that is when prices go up to keep a business afloat.

Re: Fake "Election Year Powder Shortage"!

Everyone should have learned to keep their on hand supply up to account for market fluctuations.

Locally our Hodgdon powders have been around $25-30 a pound, it had been $22 to $24 last time I bought by the pound. Powder Valley had a slight increase over the last month, H4831SC went from $18 to $20. Unless you are buying in bulk shipping will get you though. Find a couple of friends and buy in bulk.

"I really have never believed in the law of greed when it comes to production.

It's not a matter of production, it's as matter of purchasing exceeding what's on retailer shelves and in the distrubution pipe line. Any thought of a "shortage" frightens some folks, they get frantic and that leads to further demands and it spirals into a near panic -- "OH GOD, I GOTTA GIT MINE WHILE I CAN!". Some retail dealers just can't resist gouging their hyped up customer base because they can; the coming price increases will again be nothing but retailer's greed.

Producers knew the heavy demand of '08 was emotionally driven and wouldn't last long. Meaning it was a real 'shortage' but only briefly and at the local level, not due to any real insufficent production capacity. The makers had a small incentitive to do what they could to relieve the short term demand and I know some worked a lot of over-time but expanding plant capacity would have been ridiculous for them; ditto for what's probably coming now.

If I run short of anything I'll simply bid my time and wait until the Chicken Littles have again stuffed full every shelf and closet they own - at inflated prices, much to the dealers delight. Then, when the shelf drain runs down and prices have returned to normal, I'll get what I want without getting shafted.
