I had a friend that was dead set on boring out his receivers to 6x48 screws for a more durable mount? I expect they are certainly more robust, but who feels this is necessary for 308, 300WM variety of rem700 5R's?

Unless you have an extremely heavy optic and are shooting the .300WM w/o brake, I wouldn't see how the 6-48 fail that easy. Just maintain necessary torque on everything once in a while.

if it's a 700 action....it should already be 6-48, no?

Yes, it's 6-48 from the factory. If you meant drilling and tapping to 8-40, the general concensus on here is that it isn't necessary unless you are fixing mis-aligned holes.

The larger Ace Hardware stores are a good source for fasteners, clips, and specialty hardware. Here in Colorado McGuckin hardware in Boulder has rows of gray pull out drawers. They have all kinds of hardware. I included a link to the store locater page.
The thread is National Fine thread, it should be fairly common.

6-48 tpi screws are generally not carried by Ace (or anywhere else for that matter). It's a thread pitch that is used by the firearms industry mostly, and as such is considered "non-standard" by most stores (even if it is indeed a National standard thread pitch).

Best bet to finding/ordering them is Brownells or some other firearm related parts seller. Even MSC and Enco don't often carry them....
