Gunsmithing How hard is it to modify an action for an AW mag?

Re: How hard is it to modify an action for an AW mag?

In general discussion that I have had it was questionable with some actions. The area on the bottom of the raceway where the mag inserts gets very thin I guess.

I would like to hear what disadvantages there are to fitting AW mags?

Re: How hard is it to modify an action for an AW mag?

The feed ramp needs to be scalloped and widened slightly to allow the round to feed from the double stack mag smoothly, and the the internal feed rails in the raceway that act as mag lips for the internal mag need to be machined out to allow the mag lips of the AW mag fit up inside the action. A small scallop also has to be machined or filed into the front of the mag as it butts up against the bottom of the action.

I'll try and find the pics from when I had mine built and post them up tomorrow.

Cheers

We build a model for them. Its called the tac30 a/w. It would be tricky to modify one thats not that way without compromising the bottom lug abutment strength. We worked out the cuts on the CNC for the ramp. If you do it, dont cut too much out or you will ruin the action.

Re: How hard is it to modify an action for an AW mag?

I ended up using a round file to modify my ramp, I just couldn't work out a good way to get the cuts I needed using the mill. It feeds perfectly but this was before folks like stiller and defiance were offering A/W specific actions out of the box. If I had to do it again I'd sell the non-A/W action and buy one that was ready to go from the factory rather than modify. It was a PITA and not worth the risk that you'll ruin the action, IMHO.

I'm not sure what Jester is talking about regarding modifying the magazines, mine feeds just fine using factory fresh unmodified AW mags.

I agree mate, I had mine done before the AW cut actions were readily available and if I had my time over again I would simply have gotten one of them and called it good.

Heres a couple of pics from when it was first done, prior to being stipped and cerakoted. You can see the shiny areas of the ramp and the cut outs in the raceway guides as well as some the front corners of the mag-well got a slight cleanup of the radius.

The cutout on the nose of the mag was simply copying what AI had done with the AICS mags so it mated with the bottom of the action squarely. I used the AICS mag as a template and dremel sanded and filed it down.

Hope that helps.

Exactly, you run the risk of weakening the 700... Thats what i always hear mentioned.if your sticking with your rem 700 action i would take a hard look at surgeon bottom metal and alpha mags. Once you get the feed lips adjusted to your setup they run like a top.

If your dead set on aw mags there are several REALLY nice actions out there the stillers, badgers, templars all of them rock solid. Flip/sell yours and your on your way.

Either way will get you where you want to go

Re: How hard is it to modify an action for an AW mag?

Thanks for the help guys, It does seem a little tricky. I looked at an AW rifle and the ramp and cuts seemed pretty simple. It looks like I can set the mill on the right angle and space the centers to catch the tips of the rounds. I'll study it close before I screw it up! Thanks again.
