Fast Twist 22-250

Re: Fast Twist 22-250

I own two 22-250Ackleys. One is a 12 twist. The other is 14" twist, shoots 65 grain Bergers very accurately but 70 grain Berger VLD's are all over the place.

I think the secret is the velocity. The 14 twist mentioned above is 29" long and the 65 grain Bergers have a MV of 3925fps, which is more than enough to stabilize that bullet.

I don't know what your definition of "fast twist" might be, but it is my educated, (but wild ass guess) that you probably don't need an 8 twist to stabilize a 75 grain bullet depending on your barrel length and resultant velocity. It's amazing what a little velocity can do in a relatively slow twist barrel and, (in my opinion) you get far better barrel life. And, versatility. you will still be able to shoot 55/60 grain bullets without over-spinning them, possibly blowing them up? But, if you must have a 7 or 8 twist, you pretty much have a dedicated rig. And (again, in my experience) those VLD bullets will not anchor a coyote, out yonder.

edit: PS I don't think you can buy the 65 Berger any more but the 64 is available.

Re: Fast Twist 22-250

RS,

What bullets specifically? Do you have a rifle or are you considering puttin one together?

My favorite 22-250 AI load is 44.5 grains of H1000 and a 75 grain amax lightly jammed. Good for around 3300 fps in my rifles with single digit velocity spreads. If anyone uses this load, START LOWER. I have no way of knowing if that load is safe in anyones rifle but my own. I'm guessin max in a 22-250 would come a couple grains lower.

The amxes will anchor distant coyotes with authority.

Re: Fast Twist 22-250

You've got a good chance it will stabilize the 75's. Berger makes 70 and 75grain vlds that should work if the amaxes do not.

Make sure whoever rechambers your barrel dials in on the bore and not the old chamber. He can then using a boring bar to remove any runout that may be in your factory chamber. If he simply dials in on the old chamber and it has runout, so will the new chamber that is cut.

Re: Fast Twist 22-250

I have a 22-250AI with an 8 twist for my switch barrel Savage. Other barrel is 6.5x47. The 22-250AI shoots the 75 gr amax amazingly. Best group to date is 3 rounds in 2" at 600 yards. Most average around 1/2 moa.
