I am wanting to try a FFP scope. I have only used 10x scopes on my long range rig. First it was a SS10x42 then upgraded to a SS10x42HD. I love that scope but now want to try more magnification (I think anyway). I shoot a .308 out to 800 yards, have had to shoot 1000 but not very often. I have never felt like I need more magnification but think I would like it. So I am having trouble making up my mind. My SS 10x42HD I am moving to my AR15. So if I stay with 10x I want a ST10. If I go FFP I am looking at the SS5-20x50 and the Bushnell HDMR 3-21. So help me make up my mind. Stay with 10x and get the US ST10, or go to FFP and which one of the FFP's would you pick of the two I Talked about. I also want to stay around the 1500 dollar price.

Re: SS vs HDMR vs US Optics

I think that's kind of an apple vs apple vs orange type comparison. You're talking about two high-power variables versus a fixed medium power. Nothing against USO as I think the world of them, but I don't see a reason to go from a 10X HD scope to a different 10X scope. If it were your old SS 10x (non-HD) to the USO, yeah- most definitely would make sense.

10x works for a lot of things, but your life gets easier when you get more magnification on the gun. Unless you want to go to a higher power USO or a variable power USO, I'd suggest that you stick to the SSHD 5-20x or HDMR.

And since you mentioned the NF, why not? The F1 is a fantastic scope.

Yea I have been looking at those too (NF). I think there is not a wrong decision here but just what direction do I want to go? maybe i'll put the names in a hat draw one out and go with it.

Re: SS vs HDMR vs US Optics

No experience with the USO scopes or the SS 5-20. However, I do have a bunch of experience with NF, Bushnell, Vortex, and S&B. For the money, I think the Bushnell HDMR is the best thing going these days. It's got great glass, a variety of reticule choices, and it's built like a brick $hit house. I'm getting ready to purchase another one her pretty quick. I think there is a sale on them right now at CS Tactical, and I have seen them in the for sale section for about $1100.00 or so.

The other scope that you might keep an eye out for is the Vortex Razor. Not sure what they are going for these days (used) but they are one of my favorite scopes. Very hard to beat when you consider price vs features. In my opinion, they are every bit as good as NF in terms of construction and glass, and they have some features that are comparable to the high end German scopes.

Another to take a look at would be the 3-18x50 IOR. Normally a bit above your price range but there is one in te classifide section the guy is asking 1500 on. I've had 3 of them, great scopes for the money.

I think you're making an excellent choice. I have one myself and love it! Take this from someone who owns S&B, NF and PR. The Bushnell HDMR will serve you well.

My hdmr g2 came in yesterday and we took it out this morning for a test drive. Very impressed with this scope so far. Cant wait to get my Ior back and have them side by side.
