Just ran a match with my 6.5 Creedmoor. I have a 260 and they both shoot well. The reason I shot the 6.5 Creedmoor at the match was because I didn't have time to reload my 260 or 6.5cm so I ordered some. Hornady is great out of the box. Not as fast as I like but very accurate.

It's a wash and comes down to preference. I chose 6.5 creemoor because I have both a bolt and semi-auto, loaded match ammo, and better barrel life. The load recipe with close to the best accuracy comes right on a box of loaded ammo. Plus you can use hornandy FL dies and get excellent accuracy and chamber tolerances, and don't have to worry about neck sizing with all it's potential problems and extra steps.

That article linked in the first response says it all. the 6.5x47L, 6.5 CM, and 260 Rem are so close in performance, it's hard to call. The thing I would consider is availability of ammo and components. Among those 3, I would say the 260 is the best bet. Just my $0.02

P.S. I have a 6.5x47L and think I'd go with the 260 if I was going to do it over especially since Lapua is making brass for the 260 now.

I am a new member, in fact I just now joined because I was surfing looking for info on this topic. I have been driving myself CRAZY trying to decide which of these two rounds to with. I am not into long range shooting yet, because I don't have a place near me to do it, but I love the 6.5s.

I currently have a Blaser R8 in 6.5x55, a Ruger No1 in same, and an AA Entry Rifle in 6.5 Grendel.

My original intent was to get a bolt gun in either 6.5 CM or 260 Rem., but I also have several ARs, including a DPMS LR-308 and an AP4. One of you mentioned that the Creedmoor is the better choice in the AR platform, so I've decided to go with the Creedmoor in a bolt gun, and then I can get the upper for one of the DPMSs. Makes sense to me, anyway.

By the way, how much does the CM suffer performance-wise in a 20" barrel? I was thinking about a Savage Lightweight Hunter, if they can do a lefty.

Im interested in What kind of performance shooters have been getting out of the shorter barreled CM's as well. I have a 24 inch barrel on a DPMS upper but I am researching building a 18-22 inch barrel bolt gun for backpacking. Any thoughts?

I own a GAP Surgeon 260, and a Surgeon Scalpel 6.5 Creedmoor. Both have 24 inch barrels.

260 Rem
Pros:
-You can get more fuel in the gas tank with the 260 running H4350 octane. I can get about 75 more FPS with the 260 without compressing the powder.
-With the right loads, you can shoot the balls of a fly. Extremely accurate.
-I reload, so I like the fact that I can get Nosler and Lapua Brass.
Cons:
-It is 2.999 inchs +/- .002 to the lands. In order to shoot from a mag I have to run 2.871 OAL inches with Berger 140 VLD's. It really does not affect my accuracy until I get out to 600 yards. I can tell a big difference in the Berger’s I loaded .002 off of the lands, verses the ones for Mag fed.

6.5 Creedmoor
Pros:
-Running with Berger 140 VLD's you can run them right up on the lands.
-The Factory Ammo from Hornady is top notch.
-This one is extremely accurate also.
Cons:
-Compared to Lapua and Nosler brass, the Hornady brass is soft and sucks for the price you pay for a box of 50.
-Limited to the amount of powder due to the case size running 140 VLD's. It hurts you when shooting past 800. A 28-inch barrel is necessary due to the limited case capacity for H4350 if you are wanting to 100 yards and beyond.

Glad i found this post. I've been contemplating this too. So quick question, I was going to just put a (.260 or 6.5CM) chambered barrel onto my current 700 SA rifle (.308) as I found out I can do this. But, I want to feed from magazines and don't want a barrel much longer than 24".

With a 24" barrel, will the .260 or 6.5CM still out perform a .308 at distances of 600 to 1,000 yards? Which caliber will perform better in shorter barrels?

In short yes....the 260/6.5CM will outperform the 308 in any barrel length the gap just gets bigger as you have more velocity, longer barrel.

260 or 6.5CM would perform the same in a 22". Search for lowlight "shorter is smarter" post back in '09 about an 18" 260 build.

The Creedmore is a great short barrel round. You can use a faster powder and with less case capacity you don't have to worry about over pressurizing. I love the 260 and my smith has a reamer that is perfect for mag length with 140gn SMK. I load them right to the lands and they just fit into my wyatts mags. Also the neck size is perfect for resized Rem 7-08 brass. It shoots 1/2 moa all day and most times it is closer to 1/4 moa.

I've got a crap-ton of .308 brass. Which caliber (.260 or 6.5CM) would it be easier to form .308 brass to? Just picked up a Bartlein blank in .264! I'm leaning CM since I don't reload, but I might start with all this .308 brass I've got lying around.

My rifle will be mag-fed (AICS) too.

Does the loading from mag matter much if I plan on using DBM setup that will accept AI AW mags? I load my 308 cartridges to 2.90" with 155Gr Lapua Scenars right now.

No. You can run both equally well with any bullet

Better prices on bullets is a great reason to go with the .260 over the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Or, maybe you could just tell the Berger salesman you are ordering for a .260. That way you could keep your Creedmoor if you wanted to.

So they ask what round you are loading the same 6.5mm bullets in and adjust price accordingly? I always thought if you were buying a box of 6.5mm bullets to load they were the same price. Huh? Learn something new every day.

Better prices is referring to starting to reload with 140 grain Berger VLD bullets instead of buying 140 grain AMAX ammo. I admit it was ambiguous or misleading the way I wrote it. Factoring in the cost of buying a reamer for Creedmoor I would come out ahead with the 260 when I re-barrel if I am reloading by then.

Not trying to talk you out of a .260 but there may be another option.

You could buy 140 AMAX bullets for less $$ than Berger bullets, then stuff them into all those Creedmoor cases you already have.

I'm pretty sure you may even be able to get around having to buy a Creedmoor reamer if you wanted to stick with the Creedmoor, which would make sense with all that brass you have.

Either way you should end up with a fine rifle.

I'd like to stick with 6.5CM since I'll probably have at least 2000 pieces of once fired brass by that point. That would more than make up the cost of a reamer I didn't think about that.... Or I could try selling some of my brass....

If your gunsmith doesn't have a reamer (and doesn't want to invest in a reamer) for one of the most popular LR rifle cartridges, I would find another gunsmith.

If it were me and I already had the brass and dies I'd stick with what I have.

I know those are old. Just using them as an example.

What kind of support are you looking for? They make brass for it and sell hunting ammo for it, just like all their other proprietary rounds.
If you want match ammo there are plenty of options from other manufacturers. I will admit that match ammo for the 260 is a good bit more expensive, but i roll my own so its a moot point for me.

A-Square Saami'd it, Rem stole it, wildcatters made 6.5-308s for years, I had one before the 260 came out. No doubt, Rem Fubs up everything they do, Quality Control VERY Spotty, and they drop new offerings, and consumers know this, which is why they don't support new products Rem comes out with....consumers wised up.

I debated the exact same thing for months! I read Zak's articles probably a dozen times, read the entire internet on the subject lol and still couldn't decide. So I sent an email to George on what I should do for my new GAP build. He came back with 6.5CM when given the choice of 6.5CM, 260 or 6.5x47 Lapua. I placed the order the next day. I received the rifle in July and am in love...couldn't ask for anything more. Hornady brass is easy to get, cheap and seems to be very good. I have no complaints and would build the exact same rifle all over again.

For me, the choice was easy. 260 remington. I know several guys locally using it, including Zac Smith and Ray Sanchez, so there was a lot of knowledge I could tap into. Brass hasn't been an issue for me, I just get Winchester 243, and neck it up.
