Considering having my heavy contoured 24" kreiger barrel 're-profiled' to a GA#6 or equivalent. I have about 600 rounds down it so far and just want a little weight taken off the front to help with positional shooting / balance. Knowing I'll have to work up another load once this is done, is there anything else I should consider? risks/rewards?

The barrel is from Milehigh, and I'm told its cut rifling.

Re: re-profiling a barrel

What caliber is it? If its not a to badly over bored round shorten it

I dont run anything longer than 20" anomore on 308's , acutaly i personaly feel 16" is great out to 800yds

You would lose ALOT more weight taking an inch or two off the nose than profiling and not have the risk of possibly opening the bore up

6.5, 24"

@JJones75 - It is threaded and has a break, simply taking the break off would help, and I don't' really need it - such as light kick from a creedmoor. Taking that, and 1-2 inches off would probably shave a pound or so you think?

Re: re-profiling a barrel

Maybe depending on the current muzzle diameter.

Im pretty sure that either way it would be alot lighter than reprofiling it unless your turned it down to a thin sporter type conture and that could realy possibly have a negitive effect on the inside of the bore.

Not sure what kind of velocity you would lose im guessing maybe 100-150fps

Re: re-profiling a barrel

If balance is the issue, I'd consider ballasting the butt before altering the barrel. Yes, it adds weight; but added weight has positive as well as negative consequences.

Altering a barrel is essentially the very last thing I'd consider for most practical purposes.
