I'm looking for a new match rifle. I was originally looking int othe 260's but a guy is wanting to trade me a 243 AI on a stiller action with a Rock creek 8 twist barrel. It is in a greybull precision stock but If I don't like it I can always put it in a new stock. I have never owned an Ackley is there a great benefit of going to the Ackley in the 243 and is the 8 twist fast enough to stailize the 105 -115gr bullets that I would need to compete.

One benefit to Ackley a cartridge is less case trimming. Velocity gain is also achievable. But, most Ackley cartridges don`t feed as smoothly as parent shoulders. Certain cartridges benefit drastically from Ackley Improving, example, 22-250, 6mm, 257 Roberts. You gain alot more powder room because they have alot of case taper from factory. Alot of people Ackley cartridges that doesn`t improve enough to benefit from it. Fireforming is barrel wear, wasted powder, primers, and bullets. I see it if you don`t gain at least 200fps, waste of time. 243 imp vs standard 243, not much improvement.

I'd be asking about round count on the barrel. If he has north of 800 rounds, you might be looking at a new barrel fairly soon. Just a thought. Other than that, a .243 AI is a good cartridge.

Food for thought. If you want it to be a dual purpose rifle, fire form during a tactical match. I have never noticed an accuracy different in my 260AI during fire forming, so you are not wasting components in the least. Feeding would also be a non issue if forming during a match. Most with AI's will agree. Just use Win brass and it won't sting as bad if you lose it. If you shoot an Fclass match use the formed brass and load for a bit higher velocity.

I have had a 243AI for a couple of months. I've found that my fire forming loads are plenty accurate for competition. Therefore losing brass is much less a concern.
