Hello everybody, lemme ask you a question.

If you had a scout scoped Hungarian Mosin M44, would you trade it for an all original, matching #'s Swiss K31, if you got to keep your LER optics ????.

This is an all original # matching Schmidt Rubin Swiss K31. What a beautiful addition to my collection. After i do a trade for an Egyptian Maadi ak47 in the next day or two, my collection will be complete for awhile.

This K31 is almost as beautiful as the like new mosin 91/59 it's sitting next to. This is as beautiful as a swiss timepiece. I love it.

That said... we were all newbies at collecting at one time. When I was at teenager, I had belt-sanded Arisakas, hacked up Enfields, anything that went bang, etc. etc. Was very proud of my collection of fence-posts and rust.

GSBuick, you would do well to invest in a copy of Small Arms of the World hardback edition c. 1973 - 77. Old enough to have all the early-in-the-century stuff that was still floating around Africa and Asia, but still has all the Vietnam goodies and the early 'black' rifles. If you get the '77 it has the AK-74 in it (that stunned the USG when first spotted at a May Day parade in '74) I have a well-thumbed '77 edition and it's a book I use all the time.

I can't post a link to where there are a bunch of them being auctioned off... but you know the site that begins with E and ends with Bay. A hint is that this number may help you find a copy. 320714854925

As a reference... that book will save its cost the first time you buy something (or don't buy it.) And you'll know what to look for because the pictures and tech detail are superb.

IMHO, it's *the* reference for 20th Century military small arms in the pre-'black rifle' days. Not some glossy coffee table book... this was the 'professional' reference in its day. For some, it's considered bedtime reading.

Some interesting side notes with my K-31 that I took out last week:

I loaded it up with 175 gr. FMJ match bullets (obtained from Wideners) using 51.5 gr. of H4831SC. Estimated velocity is somewhere around 2650-2700 fps.
I also picked up a box of GP-11 on my way out to the range for some kind of standardized comparison.
When at the range I first checked "0" at 100 yds. using my ammunition so as not to waste the GP-11 (it was $10 a box). I also did a side by side rough comparison of the RUAG bullet and my FMJ match bullet. The RUAG was at least a strong 1/8" longer in the ogive than my FMJ.

(Note: All steel on this range is roughly 4 moa., and the K-31 sights are in meters)

Anyhow, after zeroing I went up to the 500 yd. steel and using 400 on the sights held a high center mass and shot just over it. Next shot was held tight 6 and I nailed it center mass. I then shot the GP-11 and it went just under it. Next shot, held center mass, hit center mass. I continued this pattern going all the way out to 880 and 1000 yds. Except the opposite was true when I got out there. 800 was good for my stuff but had to hold a loose 6 o'clock to hit with GP-11. I put the sight on 900 (990 yds.) and got a first round hit at 1k. I followed with a few more hits then tried the GP-11. I kept going over the 1k. Until, on the last shot of GP-11 I moved the sight back down to 800 and held center-mass. Center mass hit on the last GP-11.

This to me really goes to show how truly efficient the RUAG bullet is. One can tell it's a lot sleeker just by looking at it.
It was a great day of learning and shooting open sights to 1k with the K-31.

BTW, that is a really nice looking rifle you have there, gsbuickman. I have no doubt it will shoot as good as it looks.

I've had a K-31 for three years and still haven't come up with a load to match GP-11.

K-31's are rad rifles. I used to think I sucked with irons before I got mine. Longest I've reached with mine is 600 meters, but I've found the sight to be dead on out to there.

Just picked one up for 250. The stock is a little beat up but the bolt and barrel are immaculate. Waiting on my GP11 to get here.

Widener's still has it for less than 50¢ a round in bulk before shipping. Gotta love match-grade military surplus that's so reasonable and consistent.

If you get a chance or reload (or know someone that does) see if you can measure your GP-11 against any .30 cal bullet made in America to see if anything is as sleek as it is. I was told some time ago that .30 Cal M1 Ball (172 gr. Match) was our version of the Swiss bullet. From what I saw, we weren't even scratching the capability of the RUAG projectile. I didn't bring any GP-11 home either so as to compare with heavier stuff, i.e. 190's, 210's, 208 Amax's.

On a side note, Sirhr, it helps a lot when the 1k target is 4MOA and painted black. I could see it a lot better and gave some lattitude as to my 'finer point of aiming'

I just got my first K31. I have not fired it yet but am looking forward to it. My question is what kind of rear sight is that & are they available?

I think my dad had one of these at one time when I was a lot younger - but I remember his having hard red rubber "grips" on the T-handle rather than the stainless or aluminum looking ones here. Anybody else seen such a thing?

I also just got a hold of this Hammerli K31F target rifle. Never beed fired and I spent a couple hours cleaning all the grease out of it. Next step is to get some GP11 and see what it can do at 300m.

Many moons ago I had a Swiss girlfriend who lived up in the mountains. One time when I visited, her brother took me along to the monthly required practice session. They handed me the SIG .30 caliber (7.5mm?) assault rifle and turned me loose at 300 meters (across the valley). Having never fired a rifle, I don't recall that I even scared the target.

The old guys on the end with the old K31s? Dumping all their shots through the bullseye. No wonder other nations show no interest in attacking Switzerland.

Afterward at the local pub, everyone got a good laugh when they found out I wasn't a new kid in the neighborhood.

Oh yeah, the brother also had a SIG P210. I've lusted after one of those ever since. I'd even pay the price if they made it in .45.
