The rifle/action was a savage MKII and the stock was the ever so popular Wells G36 folder.

As stated by everyone previously this stock is beefy. I've never actually handled an airsoft, so to say I was skeptical of the quality is an understatement.

Originally the rifle was in a Boyds Tacticool and since day one I was unsatisfied with the stock. The ergonomics were "ehhh" and the quality of the wood left much to be desired.

Top Predator stated in one of his posts he thought the G36 was a better choice than the tacticool, boy was he right!

I didn't document the build, and the process is somewhat hard to explain but I have plans on doing another in the future.

The savage action required a little more hacking to the chassis to get it to fit properly. I was also determined to use the notch intended for the bolt because it was damn close.

I ended up using a 1" square aluminum tube, 1/2" round aluminum tube and some aluminum brazing rods to build a chassis that fit inside the chassis. The ID of the airsoft chassis is right around 1" so the square tube fits perfectly.

Anyways here's the result:

looks nice, and the bolt notch / handle mating looks as if it didn't screw up the trigger centering / positioning.

i guess the savage is closer than my 455 in the same conversion.

how did the mounting bolts / positioning work out?

The biggest hurdle was the boss nut/bolt jobby behind the trigger. I had to completely cut the cross member where the folder attaches to the chassis.

The action screws also didn't line up to a damn thing.

What I did was cut about a 5" section of some 1" square aluminum tube. I then literally cut the top of 1 side making it more of a "U" channel.

On the bottom of the "U" drilled two holes for the action screws and dremeled out a channel for the magazine well to fit through.

Then ordered a 4" segment of 1/2" round aluminum tube. (I want to say it was 1/8" thick) I then cut two pieces to act as pillars if I remember correctly the rear was .435" and the front was .475" I then bolted those in place over the action holes I drilled and used some "aluminum welding rods" and a butane torch and kind of brazed them in place.

Viola' a mini chassis!

After that was done I slid my "mini chassis" into the airsoft chassis and again used the "aluminum welding rods" and attached the two together.

As for the scope I always tell myself I should replace it but then I look through it and the clarity amazes me every time. It seems to hold its zero perfectly fine as well.

awesome. i have the same stock sitting in my room but i plan on putting a Marlin XT-22 inside. i also have the cheapo L96 version and its a cheapo plastic. this WELLS G96 stock is so much better and sturdier.

I don't think this can be done to 17HMR since the mags are not as long as the 22lr ones. Maybe a 10rd Savage mag would work but I'm just not mechanically inclined enuff to try an AICS conversion.

did yours have the two (aprrox. 1" by 1") mounting blocks for the airsoft receiver? they slid back and forth in mine, that's where i attached the mounting bolts. i didn't have a need extra work. just curious if they all have them or not.

jellostorm, it's actually pretty easy, the 10 round mags are definately the way to go for being easily accessable.

yeah there's spacers on the back. you can add or subtract. for those with long arms, someone along the way suggested taking flip flops, tracing the butt of the stock or already existing spacers, then cutting the flip flops to shape and adding for more length.

yep im doing the flip flop method too on a few of my builds

Actually I was a bit disappointed because it did not. After seeing your build I intended on doing the same thing.

My G96 only came with a stock/chassis, barrel and the "broken" bolt that was "supposedly" the only thing wrong with it. No receiver, scope mount rails or magazine. If I was an airsofter looking for a fixer upper I think I would have been more upset.

Did I mention everything was un-assembled and just tossed in an open box...bastards..

Here are a few pics of the internal chassis of a Tanaka AICS stock.

The over all stock itself. This one has been modified, an un modified stock will have lips that will wrap around the circular receiver of an M700 styled receiver.

These pics show the 4 bolts that hold the butt stock, as well as the for end to the rifle. With the removal of these bolts you are able to break down the chassis into three parts. So if you wanted to make something up for the rifle so you can use an M4 styled stock.

Or if you want to make it look like nothing else you have seen at the range. With just a simple block of material you would be able to mount an M16 style pistol grip and have a truly one of a kind rifle at the range

Depending on what I am able to work up, I am going to try and get an M4 Sopmod stock at the end, and possibly something else

What do you have for the bolt spacing?

I can get some measurements for you if you would like. But I do know that the Tanaka M700 rifles were based off of the Remington 700 action. When the company was first making the rifles many of them actually had the Rem 700 trades on the receiver. So I wouldn't see why a 40x wouldn't fit, but I can find out for you if you would like.
