This is my first post, and I'm not sure if this has been discussed here before. I am looking to build some steel targets, and I have located some 12560 armor plate class 1. The 12560 is 1/2" thick in 4'x8' sheets. I have also located a water jet to cut the targets. Before I lay out some cash, I am trying to figure out if 12560 armor plate is on par with AR500 steel plate of the same thickness. The 12560 class 1 has a Rockwell c hardness of 37, while the AR500 is somewhere around 52 on the rockwell c scale. Will the 12560 withstand repeated rifle round hits, or should it be only used for pistol rounds?

Re: 12560 armor plate class 1 for targets??

12560 is the softer of the two most popular armor plating, being 12560 & 46100. I believe it typically has a hardness on par with AR400. We would typically recommend AR400 for pistols and far distance rifle targets. However, the cost of true homogenous armor plating is typically much higher than AR400-AR500. If you are finding 12560 at a low price I would get some mill certs to verify its hardness.

I have been using the steel with no problem.. BUT I have never used it close range. I have hit it at 1000 yards with calibers as big as 338lm and at 350yds with a 308. As the poster above me mentioned, I was told its about ar400.

Re: 12560 armor plate class 1 for targets??

The supplier had it listed as AR450 steel, allegedly it was left over from a defense contractor job. I have been having some difficulty locating a supplier in my area that stocks AR500 steel. I hear a lot of "thats a special order"' or "we don't stock that.". Thanks for the information guys, I'll keep you posted.
