I recently purchased a Remington model 700 adl in .30-06 and i was wondering if it was possible to replace the barrel in .308 cal? Im wanting to build a long range precision rifle

30-06 is actually a fine long range caliber. They are able to shoot heavier bullets very good. i woudl leave the rifle as is, or sell it a buy a rifle chanmbered in .308.

30-06 is a great round. I've used it before in long range applications and has done well. Currently I have a Remington 700 SPS chambered in 7mm Rem mag and am opting on switching systems to the 308. Reason behind this is I'm impressed with the Rapid Z 1000 reticle for 308.

I did the same thing. .3006 action .308 krieger MTU barrel.
Go for it. I actually prefer it to my rem 700.308 SA.

Yes you can. However the .30-06 is a better long range caliber. Consider rebarreling in the same caliber with a custom barrel. You will not be sorry. JMHO

Unless Zeiss has changed something the rapid Z is a mil based reticle and it makes no difference what caliber you use. You just need to get you dope on mils and make a chart and instead of dialing mils you hold. I'm not a fan of BDC reticles regardless the type, they simply aren't as accurate as dialing your elevation and holding your wind. For the price of a zeiss with rapid Z you can buy a very nice mil/mil scope.
The only advantages 308 has to 7mmRM is ammo availability, recoil, barrel life, and brass life. If you load and barrel life isn't a big concern it's a great LR round. One issue you're going to run into with the SPS is the pencil barrel, it's not as accurate as a heavy barrel and is going to heat up quick, especially with a magnum.

You just need to get you dope on mils and make a chart and instead of dialing mils you hold. OP as others said 30-06 is a great LR round but you pretty much have to reload. 30-06 match grade ammo is expensive and there's little choices out there. If you don't reload and want to shoot LR I would just sell it and pick up a heavy barrel 308. Keeping it for a lightweight hunting rifle isn't a bad option as well but if you don't reload I wouldn't target shoot with it. Another thing to consider if you don't reload. The .30-06 factory loads are mild so no one blows up their M1 Garand. Loaded hot the .30-06 can give the .300 WM a run for the money.

Ah ok. Well I did want to switch over to the 308 because I can get a heavy barrel with the threaded barrel so that I will be able to put on a suppressor in the future and run sub sonic rounds. I understand the BCD reticles are not 100% accurate but they put you in the ballpark and fast. I eventually want to do some LR competitions and I believe that the Rapid Z would help.

Ah ok. Well I did want to switch over to the 308 because I can get a heavy barrel with the threaded barrel so that I will be able to put on a suppressor in the future and run sub sonic rounds. You won't see many people at comps running BDC reticles and for good reason. You still have to resort to your dope and the only difference is spinning a knob. With the 10mil turrets on a lot of scopes these days it's really not any faster to have a BDC and the accuracy difference will more than make up for any possible speed difference. A fast miss is still a miss.

I will say though the Horus reticles aren't terrible if you absolutely must have a BDC. The lines are much more frequent and accurate than your typical BDC reticle so you can get a more accurate hold but IMO it's still not as accurate as dialing elevation and holding wind right on the crosshair. The reticles are also super busy and I found it pretty easy to use the wrong line and miss all together due to shooter error. A decent scope with a Horus reticle is also going to cost you a bit, the least expensive one that's worth a damn is the HDMR.

BDC reticals are not for tactical match scopes. A standard MIL or MOA with good subtentions is all thats needed

Why are you stuck on zeiss? Unless you are talking about buying a hensoldt I would look elsewhere, Zeiss makes great hunting scopes but that's about where it ends. They don't have the features you want in a long range scope especially if you plan on shooing matches. The conquest line is also very limited on enternal travel.
I would access your budget and find a good LR scope that meets your needs with matching knobs and reticle (preferably mil/mil) and FFP. If you don't want to spend a fortune the Japanese made scopes combine the best quality with features for the price. I would look into the bushnell elite tacticals (the FFP mil/mil models), the HDMR, and SWFA SS5-20.

I just did that rifle. I had a Remington 700 BDL 30.06 and sent it to my gunsmith to rechamber it to 308 and put on a PAC-NOR super Match #7 5R 1-10 twist at 24" with a Tubbs recoil lug, then I bought from a friend a H-S Precision M-24 stock with a mercury recoil reducer in it. Had the stock bedded and the trigger redone (not worth it). I just ordered a Timney trigger. Put on a seekins one piece 20 MOA rail and TPS rings with a Vortex 6.5-20x50MM Mil-Dot scope. I hand load with originally 155 berger VLD with 43.5g of Varget and Federal 210M primers with Lapua brass and was getting 1/2 MOA at 200 yards on a 5 shot group. Decided to change to Sierra 175 Matchkings since they are less expensive and getting the same MOA. Going to try Reloader 15 to see what I get. I had the hardest time on choosing wether to stay with the 30.06 or going with the 308. I choose the latter because there was more load data and being less expensive to shoot with a little longer barrel life. Yes the 30.06 will reach out farther but so can the 308. I love my rifle, the only complaint I have is there is no magazines for it. The only one I found was from H-S and it only holds 4 and to me its not worth the $250+. I tried a 300win magazine but it was to sloppy and Im not sure if I want to modify it or not to work.

I like the Zeiss because it is in my budget and is not assembled overseas and its not Japanese or Chinese glass. I want to stick to USA/German glass. I could make the step up to the Leupold Mark 4 but for a few hundred more I might as well go Nightforce. But that is a step up on the budget and right now I'm not ready to commit to that. So it looks like my options are pretty much only Zeiss to stay in the budget.

A lot of parts come from overseas anyway and japan makes some excellent optics. Just as a heads up you have to have 80% or more of the parts made in the USA to mark the scope made in USA which is why Leupold doesn't mark theirs made in USA anymore. They source parts from overseas and they source those parts from china which is the junk of the optics world. Don't buy a Leupold thinking it's USA made, it's USA assembled at best.

Leupold is a reputable quality optics make though. But on the other hand so is Nikon...I am just very uneasy of going with a Japanese optic again after the trouble I've had with my Nikon. But you did mention Bushnell, which I have used before on my rimfire and it worked fine. I would like to look into mil/mil optics but I only know moa because that is all I have used.

I have the Monarch X the newer one. So you are probably right. My second choice would probably be the Vortex as I have heard very good things about that optic. I could be mistaken but when I talked to the guy behind the counter at my shop he said it to was made in the philippians......which is not where I want to go again.

Ok sounds like we agree on something there. I will never buy an optic from the philippians or china for that matter again. I was looking at the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 because it is a mil/mil scope that stays in the first focal plane. But if that comes from the philippians I can just assume what it will perform like.

I was looking at the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 because it is a mil/mil scope that stays in the first focal plane. But if that comes from the philippians I can just assume what it will perform like.
