I believe the FClass rifle comes in 6mmBR and 6.5-284.

    The FT/R comes in 223 and 308.

All have the same action, the 3-screw target action.

For out of the box rifles, they're GREAT. For the price, they're GREAT.

For F-open, the 6.5-284 cartridge is very competitive, but it eats barrels as if they were free. My buddy has the 6.5-284 model, and runs the 142smk@3000fps. He's on his 4th barrel in 3 years. They last between 700-1200 rounds.

If you are new to F class, I recommend you start in T/R with 223 or 308. Switching to F-open requires only a barrel swap. Replacement barrels from CBI run $285, and are available in many cartridges including 6.5-284 and 284.

For F class competition, the Savage is a FINE choice.

thank you Turbo54 thats the kind of info i was looking for.
i would hate to buy a gun and have to change the barrel after that few of rounds.

    thank you

Go with the 6BR for 600 Fclass and maybe the 6.5x284 for the 1k. I bought a nice stock and a CBI barrel in 260AI for 600 yard fclass and have been very competitive shooting in the mid/low 580s. The 6BR barrel is going to last a very long time, brass gets dozens of loads, and has virtually no recoil. At 600 yards it is very difficult to beat regardless of the ballistics of the magnumbs/6.5s/7mms.

Re: Savage Model 12 F-Class Precision Target Rifle.

I just picked up a Savage Model 12 F-class in 6mm br. I just shot it in a 600 yd match last weekend with very little opportunity to do load development and still managed a 590-21x, which included a first segment score of 199-12x.

There are definitely better rigs out there, but they will cost you at least twice as much as the Savage and don't shoot all that much better. Definitely a great way to get started in F-class shooting without breaking the bank.

thats an expensive route to go ..only 700 - 1200 rds before a barrel change

Re: Savage Model 12 F-Class Precision Target Rifle.

    I have the Savage 12 F-Class in 6.5x284.

For the price it's a great deal. I did have an issue with my barrel, it had a loose spot midway down the rifleing. A wet patch would skip forward about 4 inches before tightening back down. I replaced it with a Shilen all is good on that front.

My only other issue is the trigger when set down to benchrest levels is very sensitive, it drops to the safety notch if I close the bolt hard so it's either be extra slow closing bolt or run a heavy trigger. A Riflebasics is in my future before next seasons 1k benchrest season kicks off.
