Small targets like 6 to 8 maybe..Seriously how much is really needed for this...I am looking for a good clear scope and low dollar...Impossible,I suppose..Is something like 12 or 16 enough as long as one has a spotting scope to see the bullet holes? I am hopeing someone can share some light on this for me...Thank you so very much....

well if it aint over 350 dollars...it aint something that I will be using all the time...Why have a scope worth more than the rifle...belike putting a nightforce on a red rider..no sense at all..

My rifle came with a Center Point, I think it was a 6-24? I shot it out to 500 yards with no problems.

I have a 4x a cog on my 223 and it works really good to 600 but you just can see much detail at long range. I have shot turtles at 350 no problem. My long guns all have either 5.5x22 or 5x25. I see and shoot 1/2" dots to 400 with them. You have to decide what you really want! There are guys shooting service rifles with iron sights to 1000 so most anything will hit rounds at distance. The higher magnification to smaller objects you can see at distance. You can always dial down to low power for close stuff

Lots of people put 2-3+k scopes on 1k rifles. A top tier set of rings and base will cost that much.

Re: how much scope is needed for 2 to 500 target work

I use a 3-9x40 Leupold for 600 yards with a 308, and it works great! Can't see bullet holes past 200, but I dont need to for steel targets. My advice: buy the best scope you can afford with the best quality glass, not the best you can afford with the most magnification.

My benchmark for magnification is a minimum of 1x for every 100 yards. Anything extra is nice, but I'd take my 3-9x Leupold over a 4-16x Leapers at any distance.

Also I rarely go past 16x on magnification. Too much mirage.

If you shoot freshly painted steel you can see impact marks from 800 yards easily.

Re: how much scope is needed for 2 to 500 target work

You can shoot 500 yards no problem With 3.5-5x. Just like to other guy said 1x per 100 yards is more then enough any extra is great too. Buy the best scope you can. You really get what you pay for when it comes to scopes.

well these ar paper target with about a 1 inch center with either a v or an x. My Tasco is a good scope but the cross hairs cover it up,making it almost impossible to see the center every shot so some or most are out of the center ring..What are your thought on a dot cross hair...Seem it would give me a little better edge this way..But you guys are the pros.Thats why I am asking..Thanks...

Re: how much scope is needed for 2 to 500 target work

If you want any sort of precision use more magnification. If it's strictly a target rig, you don't need to worry about taking a second or two extra to find the target. If it's used for hunting, don't get a high fixed power or anything, but the rest is up to you.

Re: how much scope is needed for 2 to 500 target work

I was shooting targets at 700 and 1025 yards yesterday and I have a 5.5-25x50 scope but didn't really go over 8-10 magnification. The lower magnification meant less mirage and helped me get back on the target quicker so I could see the bullet hit. The higher magnification does make it easier to range though.

Re: how much scope is needed for 2 to 500 target work

10X at 1000 is the same precision as shooting irons at 100.
Just sayin....

No matter the price range, a scope needs to be repeatable and reliable above all else.
