Was looking at recoil lugs for Remington 700's online at brownells and such. Most of their descriptions say "may require setting recoil shoulder forward".

Can someone enlighten me on this process and can it be done easily w/out a smith?

Asking because I was thinking of putting together a new Remington receiver/bolt with a new 308 take off barrel I found locally for a great price.

Re: Set recoil shoulder forward?

No. I believe they are talking about the shoulder of the barrel that butts up against the recoil lug. Adjusting this requires a lathe and a fair bit of knowledge and machining experience. Setting it wrong changes the headspace, which could lead to a very bad day.

Re: Set recoil shoulder forward?

Furthermore you can't generally just screw a barrel onto a Remmy action with a factory recoil lug or any other and have the headspacing be acceptable/safe.

Re: Set recoil shoulder forward?

Thanks.
Yeah I knew the headspace needs to be checked but wasn't sure about the recoil shoulder thing. Heard of guys doing it with grit but not sure how.

Re: Set recoil shoulder forward?

The reason they say that is the parts they're selling may not be the exact same thickness as the one that was originally in the rifle. You may have to turn the shoulder on the barrel to insure it screws in far enough to set headspace properly. Its all because the recoil lug goes between the barrel and the receiver. Any change in thickness will change headspace....one way or the other.

OFG</div></div> Haha...okay, didn't know. Will do. Thank you!
Sometimes I get the the urge to build stuff myself but if it's out of my league then it's just more of a frustration than a sense of accomplishment.

Re: Set recoil shoulder forward?

If you want to do it yourself, Pac-Nor makes a barrel nut system for the 700 series. It won't be compatible with your take-off barrel, though.
