I know ya'll get tired of the which caliber questions but I am having trouble deciding on what to build. I'm planning on dropping off my new Remington 700 sps in 7mag to APA soon so I'll ask Jered the same question. I want a hunting rifle big enough for moose, elk, and black bear. When I get the elk and moose chance it will most likely be a once in a lifetime so I want to be sure it puts it down. However, I don't want the cartridge to be so big that I never want to shoot it except on the hunts. I wouldn't mind putting a brake on it as most of the shooting will be at the range getting ready for the hunt. I reload so ammo availability isn't a concern.

Re: new rifle build

I was thinking the same thing as Sonic..

That 7mag will drop anything in NA. It's a really good round. I've taken allot of whitetail with 150gr Ballistic tip reloads and they've worked great. I tried the 172gr Game Kings (if memory serves me right, it was a while ago) on whitetail once. It didn't open up in my whitetail, went straight through, like the deer wasn't "heavy" enough to make the bullet work. I believe those bullets were designed for larger game, like Elk, Moose and Bear and I think they would work great for ya, especially at ranges under 300 yards in that 7mag caliber.

If it were me, and ya really made up your mind that ya want to get that rifle rebarreled, I would go with a 300 Win mag or 300WSM. Either of those would DEFINATLY be enough for what ya want to do with that rifle...

Just my opinion.. :)

Re: new rifle build

After talking with Jered today I think I'm going to go with the .300wm. I already have a .270wsm so I think the next step up would be a .30 caliber. I'm a little interested in the .338 especially with those .300 grain accubonds.

Re: new rifle build

My advice, ask Jered. He's built more guns than you and I combined, and likely has some good experience to share.

With respect, maybe yoor needs call for lass gun, rather than more. I'm talking about all that 'other' usage. Magnum recoil can take the fun out of extended shooting sessions.

'Round about the turn of the 20th century, Uncle Sam's more intelligent firearms experts decided that the .30-'06 exhibited about the maximum recoil the average American male could sustain on an indefinitely repeated basis. Over the intervening century, some additional more interlligent firearms experts concluded that same .30-'06 was completely adequate to defeat any American Game animal.

The .30-'06 should get it all done, and still provide a pleasantly tolerable shooting experience for 'lesser' applications. I find that as good as it is, the .280 Rem will do it all flatter, further, as effectively, and with more tolerable recoil, but either is clearly enough gun for the job.

When the day comes that .30-'06 ammo is hard to find, we should all be long gone.

Re: new rifle build

Ok, so today I met with Jered and I'm very impressed. I decided to go with the .300mag. He's going to be putting this on a Mcmillan HTG and setting it up for 200+ grain bullets. This will be my first custom build if you don't count the AR I built myself. I'll put out more of the specs as this build goes along.
