what off the shelf match 308 in a 700p

Re: what off the shelf match 308 in a 700p

i've shot 168s and 175s. my 700p likes the 168s better, and is easily sub 3/4 moa with them. the only other factory ammo i've shot is privi 150gr (just standard bulk stuff, not match), and it'll shoot those under 1.5" at 100 yds. i've since moved on to handloads.

Any quality match ammo should serve you well, but federal gold medal match (FGMM) is generally a standard by which match ammo is judged. It is consistently accurate in a wide variety of rifles and has been a proven performer for many, MANY years.

That said, you should also have a look at the Black Hills offerings, as well as those from Corbon and SW Ammo. Every rifle has a sweet spot and yours may very well like any one of those choices far better than the others. If you have the time and equipment, rolling your own to suit your rifle/needs is still the best way to go.

Most Remington 700s seem to shoot well with 168gr and 175gr FGMM or BHM match ammo.

Since each rifle seems to have it's own personality I would suggest you test fire some of the ammunition. Shoot 5 round groups for the best read.

I thought my go to ammunition was going to be FGMM 175g. Turned out Blackhills was the best round for my set up

Good luck

Federal Gold Medal 168 and 175s
Southwest Ammunition (offered with Federal, Winchester, and Lapua brass)
Copper Creek Cartridge Company
Black Hills Match
Corbon Match
Hornady Match

Try both the 168 and 175.
But as others have said, the 168 FGMM seems to work for almost everyone. (Cloverleafs at 200yd for me. Amazing for factory ammo.)

Re: what off the shelf match 308 in a 700p

I have good results with FGMM and Hornady offerings. I also had some good results with Buffalo Bore Ammunition. Southwest Ammunition seems to have promising products as well.

Re: what off the shelf match 308 in a 700p

I just got a tuned up 700P from Scout Supply Company. My first trip to the range was with some 175 match ammo from Southwest and the gun shot it very well. Definitely sub-MOA (8-shot group that was 3/4" wide, but only 1/4" tall). The trigger was a little too stiff for my liking, so I'm going to adjust it and see if I can really squeeze more out of it.

The thing I like about the Southwest stuff is it is a little bit hotter than FGMM. I do intend to buy a box of Federal 168 and 175 and compare it to my Southwest stuff.

Since I don't reload yet, I have to use "off the shelf" ammo.....which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Never had the opportunity to try Black Hills.

One of the reasons the FGMM shoots so well in many factory Remington rifles is that they are loaded near the optimum barrel time number. Hotter won't make the rifle shoot any better unless is it so hot it can get to the next node.

HTH!

Re: what off the shelf match 308 in a 700p

I was looking for a good match ammo. I bought 155 AMax match and 168 SMKs
I thought it was weird but the 155 amax consistantly shot better. I was shooting on a very calm day

Re: what off the shelf match 308 in a 700p

We recently switched from 168 FGGM to Hornady TAP 155 and expected to give up a little accuracy for more consistent terminal ballistics. We ended up improving accuracy as well. Not an expert on anything, I'm just sayin.

That was out of 22" Bartlein's.

Re: what off the shelf match 308 in a 700p

Federal GMM and Hornady Match have worked great for me in the past. The Georgia Arms match stuff used to shoot really great and couldn't tell any difference in accuracy between it and their ultra match ammo. I don't know how it performs now haven't shot any in years.
