So I've got a REM700 WSM action on the way. I am thinking of building a relatively lightweight hunting rifle with it. I have some of my own ideas, but I am interested in what others would do. I am looking to keep this rig easily packable/portable and capable of cleanly taking game out to around 600 yards. I am leaning toward a DBM setup as well.

Please share your thoughts on both caliber and components (other than the action, got that one covered).

Besides the Seekins DBM (which seem to be quite rare these days) is there a preferred DBM/magazine combo for the WSM family of cartridges?

I recently had a similar rifle built. 7mm RSAUM, 25" #4 Brux 1:9 fluted, long action, BDL, RAD brake, and a Manners TA. I am getting 2875-3050 fps with 180 Berger VLDs with bolt lift starting around 3050.

    Considering your packable/portable desire and only shooting to 600 yds I think I would consider a 7mm WSM with a shorter barrel...maybe a #5 but 22" or even 20"?

I would definitely recommend the brake as well. Makes it easier if a follow up shot is needed.

I just ordered the Rem WSM action on sale from Brownells. My goal is a lightweight, high quality but somewhat budgeted hunter. I like the way Skyking has his set up.

My plan is 7wsm, Manner's stock (T3, T6...maybe the ultralight?), standard bottom metal, Brux barrels seem like a great value and quality, keep it below 9 lbs, optimized for 180 VLDs. Since this is not going to be a precision distance rig, I am curious about the shorter barrel as well, but I do want the best performance I can get.

Oh yeah...have Mark Gordon or John Beanland slap it all together:)

Thanks for the responses so far guys. Nice looking rifles Skyking... The rifle I have in mind will look quite similar. Barrel length remains a question. Iwould like to go as short as 20", but am really leaning towards a 7WSM and that may be a tad too short. I need to use the search feature here to get some insight as I have never owned a 7WSM before.

I am thinking a McMillan HTG or REM7 stock. I had a 6.5X55 on a REM700 LA built for my wife with that stock, and it is sweet. Maybe a varminter model stock...? Choices, choices... Keep your thoughts coming...

Re: REM700 WSM Action - What Would You Build??

I shoot a 7wsm with a 22.5" barrel in an HTG, built on a Rem 700 wsm action. Have made first round hits back to 1330, but with 162 amaxes exclusively. No luck getting the 180s to move fast enough. 4831 will be your friend if you go this short...and be prepared to stuff a PILE of powder in them. It has been my experience that my short barrelled 7wsm will handle loads that are WAY too stout for my long barrelled 7wsm.
