Ok guys I have about 400 cases ready to be loaded and I'm loading them for a 18" POF .

I've been shooting just some cheap 55gr bullets threw it with ok 100yrd results but now I'm ready to shoot some paper the right way.

It has a 1-8 twist and I think the twist is too fast for 55gr and a gun builder I know told me the same.

What would be around the best weight and bullet for the best accuracy to use when loading these up? Also I'll be hunting with them so needs to be a good accurate bullet for hunting varmints as well.

Try the Hornady 60 grn VMax. I have the same rifle and have shot down to 52grn bullets accurately.

you won't know until you load some up and try them. Many people say 1:12 twist .308 won't like heavier bullets, but mine shoots 175s better than the 168s.

I say load up what you want and shoot. You might be surprised what the rifle likes.

55 grain will shoot just fine in 1/7 and 1/8 twist barrels. threads that turn into my dogs bigger than yours are where alot of these bullet weight theorys come from.
my colt 6940 with a 1/7 twist barrel shoots 52 grain hornady amax bullets extremely accurate.

I just built a buddy a upper with one of Harrison's(ARP) 1:8 twist 16" .223 Wylde barrels. It shot factory 55gr Hornady Vmax better than factory 64gr Winchester Rangers. He has some 77gr FGMM but haven't tried those yet...

My dads arp 5.56 upper shoots 55gr. american eagle better than 69gr or 75 grain prvi partisan match ammo. So don't think a barrel won't shoot something well ONLY based on twist.

My POF likes the 77 gr FGMM the best. Measured the OAL/ free bore and the 77 fit best. This is a indicator, but when I shot the round it proved to be true. Tried about 6 other brands and weights but this was overall the most consistent.

Good Luck

I find that you are correct BCP now I have 90 bullets I can't use lol. I saw the listing about that I figured I could push them in slightly but when you do enough to feed they don't group well enough.

May have to order some since you can't ever buy shit you need in Waco TX

The "gun builder" that told you you were to fast for 55's is wrong. My 1:8 shoots great with Hornady Vmax 55's. 1:8 is the perfect twist for most everything you'll ask of an 18" AR.

A great rilfe shoots everything well, good rifle shots somethings well, a mediocre rilfe shoots one thing(LOAD),and a bad rilfe shoots nothing well. At 100yds I think flat base vs. bt is more of a consideration.

I think chamber and reamer have an impact also, not just twist. I think the 69s would be a good compromise for target and varmint shooting and won't be a hinderance till you shoot past about 400 yards compared to 75-77gr ammo. The 69s are pretty economical too.

77gr SMKs by from Southwest ammunition. I've had great results with them. This is their Run N Gun lineup. On average out of 16 shots getting 2700fps.
