I'm looking to purchase a scope that will wil me the ability to shoot up to 500 yards at the range but also as close as 25 for hunting. I plane to put this on my remington 700 and was looking at a fixed 10 power scope. Is what the military uses and they engage target from ranges similar to what I plan to do. Any advice on scope power or scope model themselves?

Re: hunting/ target shooting scope

Fixed 10x sucks balls at 25. I'd looks for something variable. A 3.5-10x would be great to 500.

What is your budget? The new Leupold 3-18x is a good magnification range for hunting. Low enough on 3x for up close, but crank it up to read mirage. Also a 3-20x S&B would be a nice size. The NF F1 or NXS 3.5-15x is a good range as well.

Just because the military used to use it doesn't mean it's best.

Re: hunting/ target shooting scope

Check out this Nikon monarch 3-12x42. magnification would work from 25 to 500 + yards and teh side focus is a nice feature for the varying distances as well as bumping from target to hunting. The BDC reticle would be a nice choice at those ranges as well:

Re: hunting/ target shooting scope

Thanks, does anybody sell a good quality scope for $400 with a power great than ten such as 12, 16 or 18? I was looking at leupold and nikons for quality but mil-dot is a must. I'm having trouble finding any

Re: hunting/ target shooting scope

You don't need a 12,16,18 power scope for shooting out to 500 yards. Hell a fixed six power scope will do fine. The reason you aren't finding much is because of your budget. Look for something in the 3-9, 3-10 power range, and you will find what you are looking for. Take the advise of the posters above.

Re: hunting/ target shooting scope

As a general hunting scope, I am using these two right now. They are both over your budget. Just giving you an idea of what's out there.

I actually found this scope on sale several years ago for 400. Capped knobs are nice, but the knobs are in moa. Still not a bad scope for what I paid for it. FFP would have been nice too.

Locking turrets are a nice feature to have on a hunting scope. A little heavy for a hunting scope, but I make it work.

Something else to consider.

This scope has none of the newer scope features. It's SFP and has mix matched reticle/adjustments, but it does fit your budget.
Several guys were running these way back in the day. Like 10 years ago.
